Young Sís learned of a beautiful land of miracles and monks beset by a hostile China; of the 14th Dalai Lama, a "Boy-God-King"; and of "a magic palace with a thousand rooms--a room for every emotion and heart's desire." Hearing these accounts--some extravagant but all moving--helped the boy recover from an accident. The stories also allowed Sís's father to relate an odyssey other adults didn't seem to want to know about in cold war Czechoslovakia. "He told me, over and over again, his magical stories of Tibet, for that is where he had been. And I believed everything he said," Sís recalls. Still, after some time he too seemed to become immune, and the stories "faded to a hazy dream." In this visually enticing, magically appealing, oversized volume, Czechoslovakian-born illustrator Sis applies his considerable gifts to painting a spellbinding portrait of his father's experiences in Tibet, where he was sent in the 1950s to instruct the Chinese in documentary filmmaking. Vladimir Sis was actually drafted by the Chinese government to record the construction of a highway from China into Tibet; he was to be gone more than two years, unable to communicate with his family. During that time, China invaded the neighboring country, and Sis senior witnessed events he dared not describe even after he returned home, except through "magical stories" he related to his son. The diary he kept during his sojourn in Tibet was locked in a red box, which his son only saw for the first time in 1994, when he received a cryptic message from his father: "The diary is now yours." Here Sis re-creates a facsimile of the diary with excerpts handwritten upon parchment-like backgrounds on double-page spreads brimming with pencil sketches of the events described (e.g., "The road looks like a cut into a beautiful cake"). He then magnifies the more uncanny aspects of the journal via the tales told to him by his father, recollected from childhood, which are printed on the succeeding spread. One entry describes a boy wearing bells who tracks down the filmmaker in the middle of nowhere to deliver a letter from his family; Sis then follows with "The Jingle-Bell Boy," festooning the account with a trail of rhododendron-leaf markings that lead his father ultimately to the Dalai Lama. I have not yet shared this book with my granddaughters. I purchased it to go along with Barbie doll from Tibet. It was not easy to find something on Tibet for children. However, this is not really a children's book.Sis open's a box which contains his father's diary. His father had left his family for an assignment in China where he was to teach a group of Chinese men how to do filming, as this was his father's expertise. They are to film the building of a road that stretches into the Tibetan Himalayas. But things go wrong and the father and his aide fall into a series of events that are told in the diary.Some of the entries are vague and surreal. We are left wondering if the father was hallucinating from illness, or has been given medicines that might cause them, or is attributing his experiences to real magical events that rightfully belong in the high Himalayas, either from the thin air effecting the brain, or from association with the monks.Because adults can look back in retrospect from the murderous invasion of the Chinese into Tibet, the adult reader feels a tension from the diary entries that reveal the Chinese building the road to Tibet that will allow that invasion to take place. All the while the peaceful gentle people of Tibet have no inclination that this is going on.There is a story within a story here as well. Sis has a serious illness as a child and his memories of his father are effected by that illness, as well as the way in which he handles the fact that his father does not return. No on knows what has happened to the father. The family endures hardships and anxiety on this account.The artistry by Sis is appropriate to the text, but is not particularly appealing to children. Neither is the story-line. I would not recommend it for children. but it does not have the elements that you would want in a book for adults either. It doesn't really have a plot, nor well drawn characters. It might be called a poetic prose piece. It is informative, realistic, and revealing at the same time that is is magical, sensitive and heart wrenching. In short, it stands alone as a literary type. I did enjoy it.

However, it is one of the new subgenre of "children's books for adults" - it may look like a picture book, but it is *not* suitable for young children.Tibet is very like Maus: A Survivor's Tale, the award-winning graphic novel that bears only superficial resemblance to a standard graphic novel. In Tibet, as in Maus, a son tells his father's story - and what a story it is. Peter Sis' father was a documentary filmmaker who was hired by the Chinese to make a documentary about the building of a bridge in a remote province - and instead ended up losing his crew and witnessing the taking of Tibet.Sis does a remarkable job of transmitting to the reader his father's love of Tibet and its mysteries and magic. Using tales his father told him, he creates an image of a dream land, a fantasy land, where weird and wonderful things happen. It's impossible not to love Sis' vision of Tibet - and therefore, impossible not to be sad that the Chinese take it.I've said that the book is not for children, and I stand by that. However, I do believe that a child who is 6 or older could enjoy this book, provided it was read to him by an adult, and provided that that adult could cushion and explain some of the harder truths, not to mention some of the blending of fantasy and fact.Peter Sis' father's story is incredible, and the book is marvelous. Any adult who loves books or history would love Tibet: Through the Red Box.

I loved this story and the magic of it all....it makes one wonder about the magic and possibilities in our own lives that may seem quite humdrum at times...but are all of the coincidences that we encounter really coincidences or is there more meaning than we are open for or looking for in our life experiences....the people that we meet..etc.

This is such a cool dreamlike book. I don't know if it's real or surreal, but the stories and pictures are captivating. I have it sitting atop my kids' bookshelf with one other book I don't want them to mess up (Billy's Balloon Ride), and now that my kids are three, I think I need to start reading it to them.

Having been to Tibet in 2012, this book brought tears to my eyes for its beauty and poignancy. This is the real story - a real, personal story. If you have any interest in Tibet, you will want to read this. And Peter Sis's drawings are exquisite.

This book is a tresure. Wonderful illustrations, great story. It shows kids Tibet as it was more than 50 years ago.

I came upon this book accidentally while working in a public library. It is undoubtedly the best children's book for adults that I have ever read! It is my most favored possession and I read it 3 or 4 times a year and never cease to be inspired by it anew. Visually stunning with a magical story line that will leave you believing in miracles. Jak lives in a post-apocalyptic Earth that is mostly evacuated. The space elevator that humans used to evacuate is still there, but it hasn't worked in years. When the Scrap Collector comes to collect Jak's beloved robot Cow, he offers her an alternative. Use some nano-beans to upgrade Cow, go to the long abandoned hub at the top of the space elevator where Scrap believes there are more nano-beans to be had, bring them back to Scrap and Cow can be hers. Jak decides to give it a shot, but no one is prepared for what is really in the space elevator.Definitely the most imaginative Jack and the Beanstalk retelling I've ever come across. The space elevator replaces the bean stalk. A robot replaces the cow. And a huge space monster replaces the giant. As for the treasures Jak finds, I'll leave that up to you to find out when you read it. Very creative. I liked this dystopian space monster tale much better than the original fairy tale. Some of the text was a little challenging because one of the characters has a single word vocabulary (kind of like Groot) but I do like that the back of the book has a section on how to use context clues to figure out what is meant each time it says something. If you're comparing different tellings of Jack and the Beanstalk, this would be a very fun retelling to include. Also great pick for scifi middle grade fans.Notes on content: Some kids may find the worm-like monster with tentacles and lots of teeth a little scary. It is only trying to eat robots mostly though. It gets swept out into space eventually.

Probably our favorite of all these graphic novels. It's done so well and smart and beautifully illustrated. My son loves them all. He especially loves the comparison of the old story and this version of the story at the end and the questions.

These books are amazing. My 8 year old daughter doesn't love reading like I did when I was her age, but with these books, she will sit and read and re-read them all. I'm very impressed with her interest in reading now.

Jak, a girl in this version with a very funky hairdo, has been told by her internet obsessed mother (well, her avatar anyway) that she has to sell her best friend Cow, a robot, for parts to the scrap man. The scrap man makes a deal with Jak to save Cow and possibly even the planet, but it means a trip to the space station at the top of the elevator to Cloud Kingdom to find some magic nano-beans.Jak and Cow actually have personalities!! Naturally Jakâ€™s motherâ€™s avatar looks nothing like her and she calls at the most inconvenient times, which was part of the humour of the story for me. Thereâ€™s a monstrosity of a space octopus type creature that stands in for the giant in the original fairy tale.The most fun of all was the use of the word scrap, which will never be the same after you read this graphic novel. My favourite was â€œHoly Scrap!â€, although â€œWhat the scrap?!â€ also deserves a mention.The illustrations were just as fun as the story, with Jakâ€™s personality coming alive with her expressions. The different colours used for the locations helped set the tone for each part of the story.This story had a bit of everything I look for in a graphic novel - characters with personalities, adventure, humour, danger and some good olâ€™ quirky bits. There werenâ€™t any boring sections in the story and I followed along without having to reread sections to work out what I missed. Iâ€™d happily reread this one!

The word of Alan never fails to disappoint. His ability to turn inexplicably complex ideas into something a 5 year old can understand is what separates his philosophical style from the rest, and is what makes this book so unique. Sure, one cannot fully name or explain the Tao, but Alan comes about as close as one could.I've had people ask me if this book was "actionable". That is to say, did it actually influence my judgment and decision making. The answer is a resounding yes. The tenants and principles of Taoism described in The Watercourse Way provide a very concrete framework to view the world through.Ultimately: choose nature, be patient, capture essence, and don't forget to keep life playful :)

Though he didn't get to finish it, it is finished enough to give an excellent understanding of the Tao as a philosophy (or non-philosophy, however one may see it), along with the added notion, the paradox, "if you can describe it, it is not the Tao".

Alan Watts is a true master of bringing the Eastern thought into the Western sphere of thinking. Much like "Spirit of Zen", Watts uses his wording and expressions, as well as citing sources from the tradition, to gently introduce Taoism to one unfamiliar with the philosophy/religion/lifestyle. This book gave me a major shift in my life, in my understanding of Eastern wisdom. I so feel in love with the work of Alan in this book! He is a master at helping communicate Eastern ideas to Western raised people. This is his final and I think best book!

I read this years ago.Liked it then.Still like it.Watts is probably the best westerner to interpret Eastern thought, at least the Tao.If you want to get a good feel for Taoist things in a compact format this is the place.Older but still very relevant.

So good I am going to read it twice more. There is a lot of deep meaning in this work that one must come back to it again to gain the benefit of the book and knowledge within.

All-time favorite, served for the first research paper I ever wrote. I think my enthusiasm got me an A.

When searching for a good teaching tool/reference for first time home buying, the list of publications can be endless and confusing. This one book will lead you step by step through each of the processes involved. Having NO PRIOR HOME BUYING KNOWLEDGE, I eagerly opened this book with highlighter in hand, reading cover to cover on all topics from finding an honest agent to buying fixer-uppers, researching mortgages, neighborhoods, etc., even whether you should consider renting vs. buyng, and all the little details in between. You will learn things you never knew before, and I found myself constantly referring to many chapters throughout our experience in searching for a home. I recommend this book to anyone seeking stratightforward and easy to understand info, no fancy jargon to cut through, just plain language writing on a very in depth subject. The book's lay out is reader-friendly as well, making it very simple to locate exactly the subject you need. Don't pass this one up!

I bought this book a few days after deciding I would start saving to purchase my first home. The information they provide is very easy to understand and they have some great tips. Due to the housing markets changes over the past 3 years the book is a little out of date by mentioning no down payment mortgages and a few other things but this book is from 2009 I look forward to the newest version in a few months.It did help me understand ARM vs Fixed rate loans and all the paperwork and information that will need to be provided when applying for a mortgage. I really enjoyed reading this and it didn't feel like homework like some of these types of books do.

Does this book guarantee I can purchase a home. So far no results.

I read this book from cover to cover before buying my first home last year. The information is invaluable, especially the section on how to find a sound realtor (I did, and she was able to negotiate a good price for me) and how not to buy more house than you should. The author also tells you what to look for in a house and alerts you to pitfalls that the first-time home buyer might be completely unaware of, and walks you through how to obtain a mortgage and the various steps involved in bidding on a house and closing the deal.This is a must-read for someone who has never bought a home (be it a house or a condo) before and is immensely educational and helpful.Highly recommended!

This book felt like a great resource as we read through it pre-purchase, but, as the process began to solidify, we were disappointed to find that rules and laws vary so much state to state that our information was either erroneous, not fully explained, or unrealistic. We just bought our first home (in Texas, so you have an idea of what area is completely inapplicable to the book) and could not find one real estate agent who even knew what an activity list was, let alone maintained one. We had a long list of questions for the sellers, but maybe 5 of the 50 were answered at all, let alone to our satisfaction. Granted, the books says "walk away" from things like this, but, when pressed into a homebuying timeline due to job relocation, who has the luxury of waiting? It is a great resource for those that have the time for a few dozen "walk aways," but, for the rest of us, it will be of little use. (Although, I use it now to remind me to kick myself when I find yet another thing that did not go according to plan.) Our first home purchase went surprisingly smooth and we love our new house, but I found little of that can be blamed on good content of this book.

My wife and I purchased this book to help us in our hunt for our first home. We were total novices about the entire home buying process since we had always been apartment dwellers. I read through the book several times over the course of a month. The book armed me with good questions to ask my realtor and the seller's agent as well. It was particularly invaluable when addressing mortgage loans and funding alternatives.48 hours from now my wife and I will close on our first home. This book gave us confidence in our decision making by helping us evaluate a wide variety of criteria we would not have otherwise thought of. The peace of mind this book gave is worth many times more than we spent for it.If you are buying a home as a novice, you simply MUST purchase this book. Even if you are a veteran home buyer, I really believe this book will have value for you as well.

The author takes you from the basics, and I do mean basics, through the technologies including radio wave fundamentals and the 802.11 and related standards. Quite a bit of detail is provided, in some cases more than I was really looking for but all good information to have as a reference just the same.One of the most useful features of this book for the engineer in the field are the real operational experience he shares with you. You get a chance to learn about defining & scoping customer requirements, an understanding of systems architectures, and implementation considerations such as performance, RF, and security. In addition, he walks you through installation and acceptance procedures as well as testing and support.From my perspective, this book is as complete as any I have read. Very well written; at a level even the novice engineer can appreciate.

July 1, 2010Format: HardcoverI have read many Cisco Press books in the last several years. They usually fall into 2 separate categories. Certification and Other. This book is not geared towards any certification in particular, even though Cisco has several for wireless. This book is also one of the more non-Cisco books that Cisco Press has put out in that the book is not filled with a ton of Cisco specific examples and hardware references. There are some, but overall, the book really has a vendor neutral feel to it.I was expecting a book that primarily focused on the recently ratified IEEE 802.11n. If that is what you are looking for, then this book is not it. You are better off reading the standard straight from IEEE. However, you would be missing out on a really good book about wireless in general. Jim Geier has authored a fantastic book that really shows his experience in the wireless field. He doesn't have the same pedigree that a lot of Cisco Press authors usually do in the way of a CCIE #, but don't let that fool you. After a few chapters of reading this book, I was completely satisfied with the author's technical abilities. The overall level of the book is probably somewhere between the CCNP Wireless and CCIE Wireless skill levels, or CWNP and CWNE for the vendor neutral types. What really made the book extra relevant was the breadth of topics covered.The book starts with an introduction to wireless concepts. Then it moves into the 802.11 standard and the various portions of that standard explaining the MAC and PHY. After that, design is covered from all major aspects such as performance, frequency use, security, and roaming. After the design aspect is covered, the site survey, installation and testing are covered. Finally, the support of the wireless network is covered.You get the whole wireless experience from this book. If you are weak on the fundamentals of wireless technology, this book covers them. If you are deficient in the design or installation, this book covers it as well. However, it does not cover anything in exhaustive detail. To do so would require a book much larger than the 450 plus pages that are in the book. It covers everything in sufficient detail to drive home the concept, but does not overwhelm you with acronyms or technical minutiae. What is a big help to the reader are the various examples the author tells regarding past installations, designs, etc that his company dealt with. There are many of these examples scattered throughout the book.Overall, this is a good book for all-around wireless education. All major topics are covered. I didn't see anything major in the book that I disagreed with. If you want to know how 802.11b/g/a/n works, this book is a great start down that road.

The author does a good job of talking about the history of Wireless Networks all the way up to modern day.With this book, the reader will be able to have a better understanding of; physical layer and related standards, learn how to manage, install, secure, and configure WLANS, and migrate from older wireless standards. Also be able to plan, do site surveys, and staging equipment.

This book is a winner if you are just getting started with 802.11 wireless networks. The author takes you from the basics, and I do mean basics, through the technologies including radio wave fundamentals and the 802.11 and related standards. Quite a bit of detail is provided, in some cases more than I was really looking for but all good information to have as a reference just the same.One of the most useful features of this book for the engineer in the field are the real operational experience he shares with you. You get a chance to learn about defining & scoping customer requirements, an understanding of systems architectures, and implementation considerations such as performance, RF, and security. In addition, he walks you through installation and acceptance procedures as well as testing and support.From my perspective, this book is as complete as any I have read. Very well written; at a level even the novice engineer can appreciate.

Really good book, and worth for price, I bought this for my class and I did learn from this book, great value for the book and for the price that anyone can afford to buy this book to learn more about wireless network.

Good information for wireless design

I have been disappointed with some of the Cisco press books recently, i was looking for book to help with my wireless studies, although not exam aligned, this is excellent book to give you an understanding of wireless networks in the 802.11n environment.

I have read many Cisco Press books in the last several years. They usually fall into 2 separate categories. Certification and Other. This book is not geared towards any certification in particular, even though Cisco has several for wireless. This book is also one of the more non-Cisco books that Cisco Press has put out in that the book is not filled with a ton of Cisco specific examples and hardware references. There are some, but overall, the book really has a vendor neutral feel to it.I was expecting a book that primarily focused on the recently ratified IEEE 802.11n. If that is what you are looking for, then this book is not it. You are better off reading the standard straight from IEEE. However, you would be missing out on a really good book about wireless in general. Jim Geier has authored a fantastic book that really shows his experience in the wireless field. He doesn't have the same pedigree that a lot of Cisco Press authors usually do in the way of a CCIE #, but don't let that fool you. After a few chapters of reading this book, I was completely satisfied with the author's technical abilities. The overall level of the book is probably somewhere between the CCNP Wireless and CCIE Wireless skill levels, or CWNP and CWNE for the vendor neutral types. What really made the book extra relevant was the breadth of topics covered.The book starts with an introduction to wireless concepts. Then it moves into the 802.11 standard and the various portions of that standard explaining the MAC and PHY. After that, design is covered from all major aspects such as performance, frequency use, security, and roaming. After the design aspect is covered, the site survey, installation and testing are covered. Finally, the support of the wireless network is covered.You get the whole wireless experience from this book. If you are weak on the fundamentals of wireless technology, this book covers them. If you are deficient in the design or installation, this book covers it as well. However, it does not cover anything in exhaustive detail. To do so would require a book much larger than the 450 plus pages that are in the book. It covers everything in sufficient detail to drive home the concept, but does not overwhelm you with acronyms or technical minutiae. What is a big help to the reader are the various examples the author tells regarding past installations, designs, etc that his company dealt with. There are many of these examples scattered throughout the book.Overall, this is a good book for all-around wireless education. All major topics are covered. I didn't see anything major in the book that I disagreed with. If you want to know how 802.11b/g/a/n works, this book is a great start down that road.

This book can benefit anyone who wants to prepare for an exam or gain real world knowledge with Wireless Networks. The author does a good job of talking about the history of Wireless Networks all the way up to modern day.With this book, the reader will be able to have a better understanding of; physical layer and related standards, learn how to manage, install, secure, and configure WLANS, and migrate from older wireless standards. Also be able to plan, do site surveys, and staging equipment.
