Captain Marvel is one of the strangest titles put out by Marvel comics. Roy Thomas explains in detailed intro about how Martin Goodman wanted to claim rights to the name. So Stan Lee & Gene Colan were told to come up with something fast. That they achieved anything is amazing. The first issue in Marvel Superheroes #12 shows a Captain Marvel with a pale green color, who has a strange manner of leaping w/ his legs outstretched. By the next issue his classic dark green & white uniform would stay consistent for the next 2 years.Gene Colan does well with Frank Giacoia, but Paul Reinman's inks on Marvel Superheroes #13 are brutal. Luckily, this book has many un-inked pages from that very issue in the back, to show how good Colan's pencils were. Vince Colleta takes over inking on Captain Marvel #1 and works fairly well. Colan & Colleta's high points are issue #3, & #4 with Sub-Mariner. Then with CM #5, Don Heck and John Tartaglione take over the art chores, & it is a shock!! It may be some of the sloppiest art seen inside a Marvel comic during 1968. Not only that, but the Metazoid villain is a horrible creation, & is never drawn the same way. Issue #5 & #6 are the worst issues in the Captain Matvel franchise. Things improve a little in CM #7 with a great cover & the re-introduction of Quasimodo (from FF Annual #5). Thankfully, in CM #8, Vince Colleta returns on inks, & in combination with Don Heck creates very strong art. Perhaps there were complaints about previous issues. Especially striking are the outer space battle scenes between the Aakon and the Kree. CM #9 features a Colan cover, & another issue of the slicker Heck/Colleta team. The storyline is hobbled by Mar-Vell re-fighting the same giant robot he defeated in the previous issue. At this point, Arnold Drake is writing, and Stan Lee was probably barely editing--or he would have noticed the similarity between issue #9 and #8.So why am I giving this up and down collection 4 stars? In 1967, Stan Lee & Gene Colan could take just a name of another golden age superhero & turn it into the first pure sci-fi hero at Marvel Comics. The fact that it worked at all is quite remarkable. These issues also serve as a bridge between the Fantastic Four sci-fi stories (featuring the Kree, Ronan, the Sentry & the Skrulls) and the later epic Kree-Skrull War in The Avengers comic. In hindsight, one can say: if only they'd had just one writer (Roy or Stan) on the series, instead of four different writers. If only they'd kept Gene Colan on the art, or given Don Heck a great inker--like they finally did in CM #16 with Syd Shores. If Stan or anyone had had a consistent vision, this would have been a classic comic, much like the Silver Surfer. As it stands, early Captain Marvel is a bit of a curiosity. But is still essential for understanding Silver Age Marvel Comics history.
After initially selecting Captain Marvel Vol 2 of the Masterworks series, I was tempted to buy this volume at the same time and dive in to the origins of Mar-Vell full throttle - But I decided at that time to go easy on the pocketbook and go with Vol 2 mainly because of the captivating art of Gil Kane (those splash pages still rank near the top of my favorite Marvel images) and the Nega-Bands and the bond with Rick Jones story line - However - the Vol 1 paperback version won me over pretty quickly with its very reasonable Amazon price and then the art of Gene Colan sealed the deal for me - Vol 1 offers the beginnings of the Kree Captain and his first visit to Earth (at least I think so) in a definite classic Marvel style.I think the reason I enjoy the Captain Marvel stories is because of my fascination with the Kree and the Skrulls - my favorite chapters in this volume are the ones where Mar-Vell battles the Super Skrull - the ultimate Skrull warrior who possesses the combined powers of the Fantastic Four. I also am very fond of characters such as Ronan the Accuser and the Supreme Intelligence, which are both associated with the stories in both Vol 1 and 2 -- I think I would have enjoyed a book just about these two warring alien races (and throw in the third of the alien space warriors, the Aakon too)The opening chapter in this book initially appears rather mild, but heats up really quick with a battle with the Kree Sentry and Colan's art is excellent - Mar-Vell's Kree weapons seemed dull to me but the story kept my attention. The middle chapters however, involving a creature called the Metazoid and another known as SOLAM, were uninspiring, and as another reviewer pointed out, seems too much alike - I agree. And when the art work duties shifted to Don Heck, this too lessened my interest in the rest of the book. The two constants in this story is the treacherous Col. Yon-Rogg - the Commander of the Kree mission and Mar-Vell's superior officer - personally I felt his best scenes came in Vol 2 but here he is unmistakably established as Mar-Vell's true nemesis - and the other is the devoted lover of Mar-Vell - medical officer Una - who is your classic style femme-fatale, both she and Mar-Vell share a common sympathy for the Earth and its inhabitants.Though it is very dated, overall, a fun story introducing the early origins of CM with some wonderful characters that would go on to even greater heights in future Marvel stories.
