So timely and important! An insightful adventure narrative of a little-known way of life. Valuable!

I highly recommend reading this book if you want to get a feel for life in a world that is rapidly changing. The author has spent years of her life getting to know a population of reindeer herders in Mongolia. Her compassion and love for the people and the country is palpable and engaging. I'm excited to learn that the book has been translated into Mongolian and that the people who are featured in the stories can read them now. What a gift on so many levels!

Sas Carey's wonderful book will transport you to a world you have probably never even imagined, and that you will never forget. It will expand your horizons and open your heart. It is not at all a romanticized, colonialist picture of a foreign world. Rather, it is an honest record of her journeys to Mongolia to follow her deep leading to learn about traditional medicine and the spiritual world of the people there. It is a completely non-judgmental look into what she sees and hears. She shows us intimate details of people's lives as they cope with a changing and modernizing world, and she shares her insights and responses to what she learns. Sas is open minded, open eyed, and open hearted as she describes her encounters with old traditions, new ways, ignorance, great wisdom, simplicity, hardship and deep human bonds.

Author Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson has given a great account of a seldom-explored, often vastly misunderstood period in the history of what is essentially one of two original American art-forms., including the very real contributions made by her grandfather, Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, an adventurer and soldier, who borrowed his experiences to shape a future genre, still rising from the 'pulps.' This man would bring us Siegel and Shuster, when many companies passed on the sole figure who would ignite, essentially, a genre and archetype, no matter how it is twisted and reconfigured, that has become the bulk of her cinema. Much of the mystery is stripped away. We learn of Mr. Wheeler's own struggles during the Great Depression as this colosus in the making grew wings. Hermes Press has created a lovely, shelf-worthy edition. Fine all around.

Nicky Wheeler-Nicholson did yeoman's work here. Her book sheds much-needed light not only on the author's grandfather, Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, a.k.a. the man who founded the company that would eventually be incorporated as DC Comics, but also on the comic book industry during the 1930s, an era of comic book history that remains shrouded in mystery. Wheeler-Nicholson makes a compelling case that her grandfather's reputation and accomplishments have been unfairly besmirched since he was ousted from DC Comics around the time Action Comics #1 was published in 1938. The Major's involvement in (and championing of) the burgeoning comic book format is well documented here, but even if you're not interested in Wheeler-Nicholson's story (and if you're a comic book fan, you should be), this book provides reproductions of 1930s-era comic book series that can't be found anywhere else. This is truly enlightening material. A must buy for anyone devoted to comic books and their history.

The true history of the birth of the American comic book has long been buried beneath a mountain of untruth, half-truth and legend.Nicky Wheeler Nicholson, granddaughter of Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, founder of what we today know as DC, has rewritten the early history of the American comic book and it's long overdue.I learn something new on every page and Nicky does a wonderful job sharing her veritable lifetime of research.Much work remains to unearth the truth beneath dusty legend but this book is a great start and a must read for anyone with a serious interest in the medium.

Review

"Hart has the gifts of a good advocate. He writes with clarity and force, and he drives his points home again and again. He exposes his opponents errors of fact or logic with ruthless precision."—Anthony Kenny, Times Literary Supplement "Atheist Delusions will be remembered as Hart’s breakout book. His contributions to such journals as First Things have long marked him as a rising public intellectual. . . . Hart’s work is now likely to come to the attention of a wider audience. And not a moment too soon."―William L. Portier, Commonweal "Few things are so delightful as watching someone who has taken the time to acquire a lot of learning casually, even effortlessly, dismantle the claims of lazy grandstanders. . . . Hart isn’t making a bid for wealth, fame, or cocktail-party acceptance: He knows whereof he speaks."―Stefan Beck, New Criterion "Anyone interested in taking the debate about God to the next level should read and reflect on Hart’s spirited brief on behalf of Christian truth."—Damon Linker, New Republic "Hart writes with elegance. Even his invective has style."—Richmond Times-Dispatch"Absolutely brilliant . . . a cultural tour-de-force."—John Linsenmeyer, Greenwich Time"[A] major work by one of the most learned, forceful, and witty Christian theologians currently writing."—Paul J. Griffiths, First Things"The strength of Hart's essay is how this modern apologia seeks to disturb the confidence of his interlocutors and bystanders long enough to raise serious doubts about modernity's 'grand narrative.' In its place, Hart presents a robust Christian narrative of true revolution embodied in the early church and sourced in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ. The original revolution . . . is for Hart, very much alive."—Lyndon Shakespeare, Anglican Theological Review"Atheist Delusions is an ambitious historical essay that takes particular aim at modernity's smug grand perception of itself as an age of reason overthrowing a superstitious age of faith. . . . [Hart] has written an important, provocative, and often brilliant book that hacks at the roots of the new atheists' arguments with devastating force."—Donald A. Yerxa, Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith"Atheist Delusions is a history that serves life . . . Hart argues for a brave thesis . . . . With astonishing success, [he] achieves his objective."—Christopher Benson, The City"Atheist Delusions leaves the reader enlightened and inspired about our past."—Elizabeth Kantor, Conservative Book Club"This is a delightful book to read; funny, wise, thoughtful, and passionate. I highly recommend it."—John E. Phelan Jr., Covenant Companion"This is a book I'll return to in the future, and one I strongly recommend for anyone interested in a counter-perspective to popular new atheist writers."—Blair Dee Hodges, Association of Mormon Letters"[Hart] writes with clarity and force, and he drives his points home again and again."—Anthony Kenny, TruthDig.com"Indeed, in a culture battle, pitting religion against secularism, Hart may be the best 'corner man' in the business, providing would'be Christian pugilists with a better understanding of both their own strengths and their opponent's weaknesses."—Graham Reside, Interpretation: A Journal of Bible and Theology"With impressive erudition and polemical panache, David Hart smites hip and thigh the peddlers of a 'new atheism' that recycles hoary arguments from the past. His grim assessment of our cultural moment challenges the hope that ‘the Christian revolution' could happen again."—Richard John Neuhaus, former editor in chief of First Things"Provoked by and responding to the standard-bearers of 'the New Atheism,' this original and intellectually impressive work deftly demolishes their mythical account of 'the rise of modernity.' Hart argues instead that the genuinely humane values of modernity have their historic roots in Christianity."—Geoffrey Wainwright, Duke Divinity School "In this learned, provocative, and sophisticated book, Hart presents a frontal challenge to today's myopic caricature of the culture and religion that existed in previous centuries."—Robert Louis Wilken, University of Virginia"Surely Dawkins, Hitchens et al would never have dared put pen to paper had they known of the existence of David Bentley Hart. After this demolition-job all that is left for them to do is repent and rejoice at the discreditation of their erstwhile selves."—John Milbank, author of Radical Orthodoxy: A New Theology"A devastating dissection of the 'new atheism,' a timely reminder of the fact that 'no Christianity' would have meant 'no West,' and a rousing good read. David Hart is one of America's sharpest minds, and this is Hart in full, all guns firing and the band playing on the deck."—George Weigel, Distinguished Senior Fellow, Ethics and Public Policy Center, Washington“An unanswerable and frequently hilarious demolition of the shoddy thinking and historical illiteracy of the so-called New Atheists.”―Michael Robbins, Commonweal (Michael Robbins Commonweal)

Hart doesn't spend a lot of time addressing the arguments advanced by today's professional atheists. What he does have to say about them -- Hitchens, Harris, Dawkins, and Dennett -- is no more than they deserve. He has bigger fish to fry. Overall, he gives us corrected accounts (as opposed to the itself antiquated story of "Dark Ages" and of "Galileo" ) of the past two thousand years of European history, and he does this with icy-cool scholarship, scathing irony, and great good humor. In the past month I've been through this book about five times, confirming Hart's historical facts and quotes from church fathers. This is a satisfyingly brilliant book. It is an overview of how the last 70 years or so of historical research and reflection have transformed the notions of European history that were conventional, accepted, and even prevalent as recently as the early 20th century.N

Very well argued presentation. Scholarship is of a very high standard and those who claim to be in this debate should read and ponder this books contents - on whatever side they sit. Alistair McGrath presents shorter versions of the arguments, so reading McGrath's more popularized writings and oral presentations will demonstrate that there is need to have Hart's depth of analysis to fully realize just how deluded the Christian antagonists really are, especially their poor scholarship. This detail lies behind McGrathWell done David Bentley Hart

This book is not the nasty polemic the title might imply. Aspects I appreciated: it provides a needed historical presentation of the cultural/religious context and moral impact of the dawn and first centuries of Christianity. Also, the book presents in short sections (not a major theme) a bracing analysis of the nihilistic abyss that is the modern alternative. Finally, the last few pages contemplating Christians' metaphorical return to the desert were very moving. As one who loves language, I found this book adequately challenging and certainly targeted to the educated reader.

Well presented and researched facts. Destroyed a lot of myths quoted by those attacking Christianity. Gave good insight to what Christianity has brought to the world in 2000 years. The downside is some of the reading can become tedious because of all the facts given. The arguments are insightful but go to considerable lengths and become repetitive at times. All in all, a most useful book to have and a wealth of indisputable research.

This is a very intelligent and well written book that looks inside secularism and modernism and that their shaking off of the shackles of the Christian faith is very seriously to our detriment as a society

D B Hart's clever and mellifluous prose covers a caustic critique of the New Atheism and the prevailing secularism. The book is an education in early church history and the cataclysmic change that Christianity brought to Western society. A change that, despite what Dawkins and his ilk claim, transformed our culture and gave us an understanding of the world based on Love, goodness and Truth. Hart shows up the threadbare hope of the New Athiests who consider a denouncement of the Christian Revolution as progress. Instead, without it, Hart shows, we are left with a culture devoid of anything but the aimless and banal, and which end is monstrous, envisaged in the minds of godless ethicists such as Peter Singer. I recommend this book be read by everyone facing the assault of popular secularism - the emperors of the day truly have no clothes.

As others have said, the title does not do justice to the book. Hart does give short shrift to the popular atheists of our day, but the book is really about something else. Drawing especially on a deep understanding of the early centuries of the Church and its cultural context, Hart offers an erudite essay that takes on the view--pervasive since the Enlightenment--that Christianity was a violent and irrational interlude between the cultured classical world and a modernity of reason and science.Hart accepts that Christianity was an interruption, or irruption, but sees it as one that revolutionized our understanding of what it means to be human. It was the most profound revolution in human history. Hart points out that, unlike today's evangelical atheists, Nietzsche hated Christianity for what it actually was, a religion the God of which is Love and which regards charity as the highest virtue. It was, he understood, unique and subversive in its insistence on God's universal love--beyond ties to place, tribe, nation, or ruler--and the duty of Christians to help the sick, poor, weak and oppressed, to visit prisoners, and to respect the intrinsic dignity and worth of all human life. Its adherents often disappoint, as Hart insists, like all other human individuals and institutions in our fallen world. But in developing a (highly sophisticated) understanding of the God-man in whom God became human so that humans may become divine, Christians of the early centuries overthrew older views of the infinite distance between God and humanity and rejected the arbitrariness and immorality of the pagan gods. Christians established a world-view that saw the world as law-governed and humans as subject to a natural law "written on their hearts" and--in great contrast to pagan religions--a social ethic. This made scientific discovery--initially largely the work of churchmen and, like Galileo and Newton, devout Christians--a reading of the book of nature that God had written. No longer could we say, except in the depths of despair like the brutally blinded Gloucester in King Lear, "As flies to wanton boys are we to the gods; They kill us for their sport." Christianity, says hart, is a religion of joy and hope, as opposed to the prevailing pagan sadness and resignation. So Hart's argument takes us from the pagan world, with its lack of a sense of the arrow of time and hence of the future and of the purpose and direction of life, its moral callousness toward the weak and oppressed, through the Christian revolution in which king and slave, aristocrat and worker, were of equal worth as sharing in the divinity of the God-man. The Church--again unique in its separation of religion from the state--suffers (what Hart sees as) the catastrophe of being adopted as the religion of the Roman Empire. But unlike the pagan cults, the Church retains its subversive aspect. It insists on the submission even of emperors and kings to God. The long struggle (as well as collusion) between church and state ends in defeat for the Church as Protestant rulers place themselves at the head of their national churches and Catholic states like France and Spain completely subordinate the church to the monarchy--even in Spain's case insisting on the Inquisition as an instrument of "nation-building." The long march of the hypertrophied state culminates in the secularist horrors of the 20th century. Indeed, Hart argues, the modern secular state has a unique penchant or drive to violence on a vast scale that makes the violence attributed (much of it wrongly) to Christianity appear minuscule by comparison.Hart's view of our present cultural situation is exceedingly--and for a Christian one might say excessively--bleak. He sees a post-Christian world no longer restrained by any conception of the equal dignity and worth of the individual. The moral restraints that are rooted in the Christian social ethic but have no solid basis in secularist ideologies, survive as memories for awhile but then fade. A foretaste of this world appears in the enthusiasm with which progressives and liberals of all kinds took up the eugenics movement in the U.S., which the Nazis adopted and learned from. The twentieth century, with its court-mandated sterilizations, lobotomies, scientific experiments on prisoners and denial of treatment to poor Black men in the interests of science in the U.S. as well as the unrestrainedly murderous anti-Christian regimes (atheist or neo-pagan)of Russia and Germany, shows us the post-Christian future. It is a world in which the God who is Love is dead, science is freed from moral restraint, and humans become objects of manipulation.Fortunately, there are developments that might make us want to temper such pessimism, not in the sense that Hart is wrong about the dehumanizing implications of a loss of the social ethic or spiritual depth and beauty of Christianity, but in the sense that secularization is not a done deal, not beyond academia and elite opinion anyway. Christianity is growing rapidly in Africa, Asia, and Russia, has not succumbed (except in its liberal forms) to secularization in the U.S., and rumors of its demise are greatly exaggerated even in Europe, according some accounts (God's Continent: Christianity, Islam, and Europe's Religious Crisis (The Future of Christianity)).But this is a profound and serious book that invites us to confront what is at stake in the secularist trends among Western elites.

Exactly what I needed to know... I took this book on a weekend holiday trip wondering if Provence would be of interest to visit. The 3 Day Guide To Provence gave me exactly what I needed to know to make an informed decision. Lots of information here without a lot of real touristy stuff thrown in. If you want to visit Provence this book offers to major attractions and what you should plan on visiting. They also have a book on Berlin so it is now on my list of books to get before long.

This is a great travel guide for Provence in France. I am getting married and my husband and I have been looking for the perfect honeymoon destination. And we've found it thanks to this book. It's a great resource for all the places to see in Provence as it highlights all the best places to go. I love how the author wove history, geography and detail into the narratives of the different attractions, restaurants and historical places. Each page is filled with excellent descriptions that bring the cities, cathedrals and avenues to life in your imagination. It's like getting advice from an excited friend who has visited and obviously loves the place. The enthusiasm in the descriptions is infectious.I also appreciated that the guide has addresses and phone numbers listed. No Internet searching or trying to find them in the small print of a typical guide book that is loaded with advertisements.I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in traveling. I noticed there are several of these for other cities and I definitely will check them out as well.

Whenever I travel or visit other places, one of the most important thing that I should check on is where can I get the nicest food, I like trying dishes that are new to me. I love that the author included restaurants where you can dine as well as what cuisine and specialties they offer aside from the places you can visit and hotels to stay. The food is really interesting. This book is wonderful, it made me want to visit France. Provence, I think is undeniably a beautiful place. I will definitely visit it when I have the chance. The Lavender Fields could be the best place to visit though it 's seasonal, it might really feel good seeing all of those lavenders and its fresh colors. The photos are beautiful too and very inviting.Nice and helpful book, definitely something to have when you have plans to travel to France.I would recommend this book to people who love to travel and explore different cultures. A good read for everyone.

Weird little personal essay if someone's travels, possible designed as advertising for places named? Quite useless

This was junk info, and not much info at all

I liked the convenience.

This is a wonderful travel guide for the location of Provence in France. Being a history major it was great to have learnt about the historical information behind this beautiful place, the various attractions , restaurants and monumental structures that can be visited. The content and the use of words the writer uses is so vividly captivating , I literally want to save my money to visit this place. Great travel guide to a beautiful place!

There is so little information in this publication, that it is a waste of paper!
