This review applies ONLY to the Kindle edition, although I actually purchased both at different times, as I bought the Kindle much later.The Kindle version had NO links either to a download site for the video or to a streaming-video site. This is the first craft book I have purchased for which this is true. I have roughly 500 patterns and ebooks, some Kindle and some PDF, and this is the first time I have come across this issue. Even my 99¢ patterns have video links, not to mention links to download PDFs of all the charts and diagrams which can then be printed for portability. In general, life is easier witj the digital books, since I don't have to trace or scan or enlarge at 200%, or whatever the instructions call for. Thus all my big complaints about e-readers have been answered, namely lack of color, lack of good imagery, lack of size (with the new 10" tablets), and lack of a way to get the patterns as I could from physical books. But not in this case. If the Kindle edition were much cheaper and noted that there was no video, I would feel different. But they are priced only a few cents apart, not enough to iustify forgoing this book's main calling card
My wife wanted to try tatting so I bought this for her. Lesson 1 taught her that tatting was a lot harder than she thought. The book and dvd do a great job of taking you thru the steps of tatting. If you have nimble fingers and infinite patience then tatting is for you and this combination book/dvd will get you headed in the right direction with clear, concise instructions.
I decided to learn how to tat after years of crocheting. Tatting requires patience to learn. There is a high learning curve. It took me a while to learn how to make the double stitch. This book was helpful, especially the accompanying DVD. You can learn to crochet by following written instructions. With tatting, you definitely need the visual assistance. Having the written information as well as the DVD helped tremendously. If you watch the DVD and follow it step-by-step, you will learn. Once you learn the basic stitch and start tatting, you can pick up additional tips through the numerous videos on the subject on You Tube.
Hands down! The best instructions that I have encountered yet (and I own 6 tatting books and watched many videos). The DVD and book instructions both start from how to wind the bobbin. Great for a true beginner. I didn't know anything about tatting. I don't know anyone who knows how to tat. I've never actually seen anyone tat before (except for some other not so helpful videos). Yet, in two days I am now making Double Stitches, Rings, Decorative Picots, "Functional" (attaching) Picots and Chains AND reading patterns! I couldn't be happier with this DVD and book.
This is a must have book to any tatting book collection. I have a copy and reference it often. It has a lot of great beginner patterns and is not overly complicated. I recommend it to anyone wanting to learn how to tat. I bought the book as a reference book as I already know how to tat. I learned from it and improved my skills.
I am a beginner and the book lost me in some areas. Some of the instructions were incomplete. Snd the Daffofil Doily pattern had errors too. Round 1 says there are total 7 rings.... What do I do after ring 7? I only have 6 chains... What do I do next. After ring 7 it jumps to round 2. It doesnt tell you how to end each round. Cut and tie? Split chain? May be good instructions but get your patterns someplace else.
The book is very well done with professional quality pictures. They are clear and large enough to see what you need to do. It is a good supplement to the DVD. Having a DVD to go along with the book is very important for me. You really need to see the hand movements to understand what to do. The DVD is well done with clear close ups and a good professional voice. She takes her time when she talks and with the hand movements, which makes it easy to follow her. It's a good book to get you started on tatting. For some of the more complicated things, I had to supplement my learning by going to the internet and youtube. You will definitely learn how to tat with this book. Yes, I found a typo and some errors in this book, but I did learn how to tat in spite of that. It's a good book. I have not bought any other learn to tat books, so I can't compare it to other books. There may be better ones out there (or worse), I don't know.
If you want to learn to tat, I recommend buying this book and DVD. I had only minimal knowledge about tatting, and this book/dvd enabled me to catch on very quickly. I think the DVD makes all the difference - seeing the actual tatting performed step by step and being shown what to do with your hands and the thread is what helped me to finally get things right. The book has some great patterns for all levels. I highly recommend this book/DVD.
