Review

"This book chronicles the suffering, despair, and ultimate triumph of the Unger family in overcoming a deadly pediatric cancer called neuroblastoma. Faced with desperate situations, his loving family was determined to save his young life by reaching out to friends and the internet to search for expertise in novel cancer therapies. Throughout this arduous journey, and without any guarantee of success, they have courageously walked into the unknown. Louis was indeed a trail blazer in the then untested clinical study, which has now proven to help many other children afflicted with neuroblastoma that has spread to the brain. We all salute the Ungers for their courage." Nai-Kong V. CheungMD, PhD, Head, Neuroblastoma Program; Enid A. Haupt Chair in Pediatric Oncology, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center"We claim to be in charge of our lives until we are forced into alien territory; however, these are the circumstances that push us to explore our strengths and weaknesses. This is what happened when Louis, the three-year-old child of Mark Unger, the author, and his wife, Mary Ellen, was diagnosed with cancer. If such a small kid is bedridden even for a day, it breaks the hearts of their mom and dad so nobody can even begin to anticipate the kind of shock and pain that Mary Ellen and Mark Unger endured when such a devastating diagnosis presented itself. First Survivor by Mark Unger is the documentation of various aspects of that phase of their lives. They were not from medical backgrounds and all the medical lingo seemed very difficult to them. How could they help their child if they would not be able to understand their own child's treatment plan? The author came up with the solution of making regular notes. He wrote down everything that the doctors prescribed, suggested, or said related to Louis' condition. If there was any word that was foreign to his ears, he made a note to look it up later. He would make a list of questions and research the best professionals and hospitals to cure Louis. These tasks created an illusion for him of being in charge of this ordeal. While he was doing this, his wife concentrated on Louis. She told him stories, showered him with immense love, gave her undivided attention, and ensured that he got all his medication on time. Together, Mary Ellen and Mark Unger made an excellent team to fight a battle of grave uncertainty. The sight of your child being poked by various devices is quite overwhelming, but they remained strong because giving up was not an option. Louis' bravery during the intense, painful, and extremely intrusive procedures is both inspiring and heart-wrenching. You want to see a child who is laughing merrily and playing around, not enduring an unimaginably painful series of medical procedures. The gifts that many relatives, friends, and organizations sent for Louis provided a sense of support to the parents. Reading about this gave me a direction for the future. Earlier I used to wonder how can I offer support if anybody is going through a struggle of this kind. Now, thanks to the author, I know there are many ways to comfort a patient and their family. The regular updates that the author kept sending to his friends, family, and colleagues were also very valuable. I fell in love with the family pictures that he has included in the book. First Survivor by Mark Unger is not an ordinary book. It is for readers who are either struggling with cancer or are caregivers to a child in a similar condition. The right audience for this book includes the people who wish to understand what it takes to fight a battle in which odds are very badly stacked against you. Despite the medical jargon, there is an emotional element present throughout the narrative that will keep readers praying for Louis' and his parents' sufferings to end. My heart goes out to Mark Unger, Mary Ellen, Harry, and -- of course -- brave Louis."Reviewed By Ankita Shukla for Readers' Favorite

From the Author

Our son's battle with childhood cancer changed everything for my family. Sharing our story brings all the difficult emotions flooding back, but I believe it's a journey worth describing because it might help others. This book shows how my family cried, laughed, and rode the scariest roller coaster imaginable.  Our son's survivalbecame an obsession. We learned it was ultimately up to us to protect our son and to find the best path for his survival. Louis, who was three when first diagnosed, showed the unrelenting courage and determination of a true warrior. He gave us the strength to confront and reject the diagnosis of "Zero chance of survival." I hope this book honors our extended family, friends, and the dedicated doctors who ultimately made the difference between life and death for our son. My message is this: There are no dead ends, only new paths.        Mark Unger, Author

I worked with Mark Unger for several years, including the years Louis was being treated. During this period, I also had a son who had a severe medical problem.Mark has amazed me with how well he has told his family's story here. This book will be a huge help and inspiration to anybody who has a child facing a severe medical problem, but especially a child with brain cancer. ThisThis book is informative and inspirational for any reader, but will be really valuable for any parent with a truly sick or injured child.!

First Survivor, an e-book published, copyright and written by Mark Unger. The book is sub-titled “The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough”. The presentation follows with the author’s “true story of our unique journey. All proceeds from this book will go to the Carrot Seed Foundation where they will be used to fund neuroblastoma trials and support the children and families who are stricken by this disease..” There follows an account of this closely knit, loving family and how they reacted to learning that their 3-year old son had neuroblastoma. At the time of his acquisition this malignancy provided practically zero survival rate. The story then follows how they managed to cope with the tragedy - the need for constant care largely provided by assistance from the child’s mother both while in the cancer treatment centers and the periods at home. Simultaneous the attempts by the father to keep his only slightly older brother who was the stricken child’s constant companion from feeling unloved and ‘left out’, And all of this while attempting to maintain some business activity. At the same time these intelligent individuals were themselves delving into treatment plans available throughout much of the world, suggesting possible changes to the sympathetic, cooperative and receptive physicians who themselves were completely involved in attempting to move treatment for these unfortunate children toward a better prognosis. And perhaps most importantly is the part played by the child patient who at this early age was immensely corporative acting with a maturity far beyond his age through Cat-Scans, extremely painful bone biopsies, horrendous surgical procedures and repeated bouts of chemotherapy. Fortunately, the combined efforts of all of the principals finally delivered a live individual free of this devastating disease.Discussion: The author has set forth an extremely detailed account of the day to day activity of the child, various doctors, his wife, the child’s emotionally close brother and his hours of researching neuroblastoma. It is a book that is a must read for any parents who have a child suffering from the same malignancy, as well as offering a template for family activity when even similar devastating disease strikes one of their small children. For those parents newly encountering this devastating condition the author has included 13 pages of glossary, 10 pages of Medical Background which are further explanations and 21 pages of a concise list of the child’s survival activitySummary: . A truly remarkable depiction of growth of a protocol that has led to a remarkable survival rate for suffers of a malignant tumor once with an almost zero survival rate.

"First Survivor" by Mark Unger is the extraordinary story of his son Louis, who at age three, is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called "Neuroblastoma" and is diagnosed with a zero chance of survival when the cancer spreads to his brain.Mr. Unger and his wife Mary Ellen refuse to give up on their son and as a final resort join a trial at Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC where 3F8 antibodies 8H9 antibodies circumvents the brain's barrier and are released into the fluid surrounding the brain and attack and kill all remaining cancer cells. The story starts with Louis first being diagnosed on Thanksgiving 2001 and is finally declared cured in March 2008. During that time the child is put through hundreds of treatments that are in many ways might be considered cruel, but which in the end are all part of the cure. Louis is one hell of a courageous boy and his parents, doctors, family members, and friends play a major part in his recovery and cure.Mr. Unger writing is clear and concise and never once did I find myself lost or unable to understand certain procedures and terms. The procedures and treatments used on Louis to cure the cancer were in some ways experimental and in some cases were only in the trial stages. One procedure was actually named after the young patient, and because of its success children suffering from this terrible disease have upward to a sixty percent cure rate at the present time...an amazing leap thanks to the doctors, researchers, and personnel who have dedicated their lives to the treatment and cure of children with cancers. Real Heroes!!!!

I rated First Survivor: The Impossible Childhood Cancer Breakthrough.....by Mark Unger, 5 stars for several reasons. The obvious one is that he wrote a book about his son's battle with neuroblastoma using terms that we're clear, concise and easy for the non-medical professionals to understand. Words that may be foreign to an average person were highlighted in the kindle version. Just tap & the reader is taken to the glossary. Another reason for 5 stars, is of course the clearly written style that may be read in one sitting , I know that I'd have finished it that way if I would have had the time. Also, despite being a truly horrifying experience for a young family to go through, the entire Unger family was brave and a warrior in their own way. As a mom (who is a RN), I have great admiration for each family member. Lou, an adorable three year old at diagnosis, was as fearsome as the T-Rex soft toy that he brandished at nursing staff prior to needle sticks and other painful procedures. Mary Ellen served her role as mother beat with honor. Mark, was not only father and caretaker of Lou's brother ( both parents making sure he wouldn't be left out and feel forgotten), but an amazing researcher and advocate for his son's treatment. So often, a book about childhood Cancer can leave the reader in tears, but not this one. I actually was not going to purchase it, but my mind was made up when I saw the proceeds were going to research and therapies. Finally, this book is a great example of how research is helping to not only extend the lives of those with cancer, but they are learning how to use our own bodys as weapons against the cells gone wild!
