Loved this book, I am now reading the secret lives of the Presidents! I really enjoyed reading about how the people who have run our country in the past as well as those today are truly human and capable of the same mistakes that we all are.

This could have been a fun book. It could have been loaded with trivia and fun tidbits but the writing is so heartless that I cannot even begin to tell you how bad it is. I read another review that mentions this very thing but the fact that the reviewer gave it 3-stars made me believe that there were just a couple of infractions. No. This book is loaded with it.For example, we all know that Martha Washington was married once before George. She had several children with her first husband Daniel and the author tells us that two of the children died, then her husband died and then O'Brien writes, "... at twenty-six, Martha was a widow with two little brats left to raise..." Are you kidding me? Brats? This woman just lost her children and her husband and there is simply something wrong with associating our founder's wife with raising brats.There are many of these insults throughout the book and so save your money. I'm glad that I grabbed it on the Kindle Daily Deal for a couple of bucks because it is worth much less than that.

I hadn't expected a whole lot when I started this book. That's pretty much what I got. To be honest, the stories of the wives of the presidents of the 18th and 19th Centuries were fairly well informative. Probably because I really didn't have a great deal of knowledge of most of them prior to reading this book. On the other hand, I was greatly disappointed with O'Brien's short stories of the First Ladies of the 20th and 21st Centuries. I was aware of most of their histories, and he added little information. Many of his comments seemed snarky. And, he chose to go with awful drawings of the First Ladies, rather than photographs. Now, I understand that prior to the mid-19th century photos were not available, or were only rare (and often of the First Lady well after her husband was out of office). However, the drawings he used were abysmal. For example, the drawing of Rosalynn Carter showed her next to John Wayne Gacy, a serial pedophile and child killer. This was based on a single picture taken at a fundraising event, where Mrs. Carter had her picture taken with dozens of strangers, as many people in the public do. She never knew Mr. Gacy, or had any dealings with him. The drawing ignored Mrs. Carter's tremendous humanitarian works during and after President Carter's term, as noted by Mr. O'Brien. I'm sorry, but I cannot recommend this book to anyone interested in better understanding the wives of our presidents.

profanity and slang are not what i expect in a historical biography. By the time I got to chapter 7, I read how Martha Washinton "bitched up a storm", John Quincy Adams was "a poor slob", and John Tyler "pissed off" both the Democrats and Whigs. This is horrible! i want to keep reading this book as I am curious to the subject matter but can't help but feel like I'm reading a term paper from some Community College Rhodes Scholar. That this book was allowed to be published in such an amateurish manner is sad. Rage rage against the dying of good language!

I had great expectations for this book. It did not disappoint in the material. Having said that the author appears to have been writing for third or fourth graders. He uses a breezy, cutesy style that became old quickly. I couldn't wait to get to the end of the book. He used George H. W. Bush's pet name for Mrs. Bush, which I felt was not appropriate. As for the illustrations, I would have preferred photographs. As mentioned, the material was informative. He just needs to cut back on trying to be too cute in his writing style.

A great introduction to the personalities, and their interaction with the historical settings and ways that woman's lives were circumscribed. It highlights their courage and fortitude, especially with some of their grumpy husbands. They varied according to temperament, from bookish introverts to those who could throw entertaining parties (not that they are necessarily mutually exclusive). They also varied in their KQ (Kindness Quotient), and their attitude to their staff. Some were brilliant, and should have been President. And so many, had many births….. It’s a great introduction, and it would be interesting to hear from someone who knew the history better than me. I’m an Australian, married to an American (based in Brisbane), so I could engage hubby in lots of interesting discussions. I think it would be a great one for a year’s book reading group.I actually ended up listening to the AUDIO version on my iPhone/headphones whilst walking, so having the book was a great backup.

I had seen photos of portraits of Martha Washington, but had no real idea who she was other than as Mrs. George Washington. I had no idea that her father-in-law during her first marriage was such a wily tyrant, nor that Martha took great pleasure in destroying his hand blown wine glasses once the old pain-in-her-life finally died. I was never taught that Mrs. Tyler wrote a book about being a First Lady. BTW, it is currently in reprint. It was fun to see just how much these ladies did for their presidential husbands, and how they lived their lives as far more than just as Mrs. President. I loved this book.

A lot of what was written has been said before. Had to force myself to finish it. If you never read anything about the 1st ladies you'll find it interesting.

Snarky, slangy stuff. As a lark I purchased this at a low price on kindle, and I enjoyed the first part of the book. Still, it was an uneven writing style with words like "brats" and such sprinkled in. But when I got to the 20th and 21st Century women, I was appalled. Particularly the rude chapters about Rosalyn Carter, Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama were ignorant. As polarized in approach as today's politics. The incidents brought forward, particularly for Michelle Obama, were ridiculous non-stories, callous, and in Obama's case, even racist. Wish I had stopped reading before that.

And, moreover, the 2nd Amendment was our only defense against a corrupt “gubment”...even though he was a member of one branch of that local government himself!His cherished pictures of his father and himself in uniform were reminiscent of the era in the South with sitting rooms decorated in dusty oil paintings of Colonel Beauregard, a daft uncle who served in The Lost Cause of Northern Aggression. I forget that there remain such rooms in the Deep South. But they exist outside those geographic boundaries as well.Kathleen Belew tells us of other such rooms but decorated in GI Joe battle fatigues, Nazi symbols, Rhodesian flags, a brand of perverted religion called Christian Identity, and laced with racial hatred ever as much as was that proffered by the faded Uncle Colonel Beauregard. How these social dynamics wind their way toward the main stream today in political power and culture is a core outcome of this important new book. To understand the present, we must understand the past half century since the Viet Nam War was ended by politics but not victory.Professor Belew’s interview on Fresh Air by Terry Gross led me to her book. The interview exuded the air of scholarship by someone who fully understood the depths of the movement, it’s roots, and how it has wound its tentacles of racial animus into the 2016 Presidential Election. The read of the book after downloading to my Kindle app proved more than worth the price of admission! Well written, which can be challenging for contemporary history, the book leads the reader through the psychological chains that a critical segment of Vietnam Nam vets returned home with. They’ve not yet removed them. Indeed, many have died, often killing innocent bystanders as the point of their Rambo-style terrorism, rather than take them off. Indeed, Rambo’s cultural namesake, Bo Gritz, plays a central role in Belew’s narrative. But there are so many others that await the reader.Having the upshot of this “we didn’t get to finish our war” tirade gob-smack my personal life, which further validates the author’s thesis, was when the sitting Judge insisted to me that the murdered children in Newtown CT was just the cost of doing business in protecting the 2nd Amendment. And, yes, the Judge believes that it was a government conspiracy by President Obama and the Liberals to come for our guns. (I guess President Obama just forget to execute that order.) The sociologist C. Wright Mills once said that when history intersects your personal biography is when social science really becomes alive. And, to use a contemporary phrase, you can’t make this stuff up!Belew’s work, Bringing no the War Home, certainly lived up to its title. It touched me through personal relations with high school classmates and other acquaintances who served in Nam, whereas I did not as a college deferment recipient. They all brought home varying gauges of these mental shackles that Belew so vividly describes in this work. If you were born in the latter years of the Baby Boom, I’ll bet it will touch many of the relationships that you’ve had with Viet Nam vets too.

The White Power Movement, a decidedly racist amalgam of men, remains alive and well, according to this scholarly work, but its threat to the nation and to the average American is not entirely clear.The author, a university professor, helps us understand some basic landmarks in the evolution of the WPM. First are the connections between the Klu Klux Klan and the WPM in the years around World War II and their hellish campaign against Blacks. Secondly, the reader learns of the traitorous identification and fascination of WPM rebels with Nazism and its associated anti-Semitism. Thirdly, and the most important lesson offered by the author, is the role that the Vietnam War played in the formation of disloyal veterans whose leaders declared “war” on the U.S. government, a traitorous act, hence the subtitle of the book, “bring the war home.” WPM leaders disavowed their government fearing it was taking the American people in the wrong direction.These men organized paramilitary teams and thereby posed credible challenges for American law enforcement personnel. Along these lines, the author connects several events, including Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and the Branch Davidians of Waco, Texas, to the deadly Oklahoma City bombing in 1995. The author affirms a WPM connection, but she also maintains that the FBI and the ATF, primarily, kept the white rebels off balance and against the wall.I have two main observations about this work. One is that while Professor Belew alleges the continuity of a serious racist threat, my reading didn’t find sufficient support for it. The conspiratorial connections are laid down, alright, but the organizational capability of the WPM raises questions, namely that the insurrectionist leaders, as presented in the book, strike me as unsophisticated, back-country rustics squaring off with the U.S. government somewhat blindly. Secondly, while I find the author’s information abundant and well researched, I also find it circuitous and repetitive, a surprise given her prestigious publisher. Nevertheless, Bring the War Home offers a worthwhile gathering of valuable information, including names, and events, for students of racism in America and issues of national, domestic security.

Belew has written an excellent and important history of the post-Vietnam white power movement in the us which indispensable for scholars of US history and politics. Among the important interventions this book makes is its focus on the relationship between Cold War imperialism abroad and white power militarism “at home,” its transnational understanding of 1980s white power mercenary activities and iconography, it’s account of how Vietnam reinvigorates and redirects civil-rights era forms of racist violence, and it’s careful deconstruction of the Lone Wolf as a concerted strategic innovation of the organized white power movement. Amidst a slew of well-deserved attention to contemporary American Fascisms, Belew’s book stands out fo it’s principled historiography, impressive archive, and novel analysis.

One of the most wonderful children's books I have seen... There are dozens if not hundreds in my house at the moment and this one stands alone. You'll see!Great for all ages, but my 10 year old and one year old granddaughters are going to love it. The older granddaughter can lead the little one though the vivid artwork, all the while both of them learning, albeit subtly, life enhancing values.Those who love kids, appreciate art and environment, owe Joel Harper a debt of gratitude! The illustrations make the book! They tell the story in a beautiful and fun way! Love Erin's style of illustration... fun, colorful... a picture says a thousand words!!! I highly recommend this book for every school and every library!

A wonderful book! My 3 year old daughter has asked to read this every night since we got it. And, I'm happy to say that she is been inspired by it as well - we've done several impromptu trash pick-ups in our home town now! A must for every parent who hopes to instill a sense of environmental stewardship in their child, and a fun read!

I am a big fan of this author. I went to one of his readings. He is very personable and the children loved him.As for the book, the illustrations are wonderful and like "All the Way to the Ocean" this book sends a powerful message regarding our environment. One of the things that I really like about this book is that the child does not have to know how to read. It is a book of illustration.The great thing about this is that it encourages the child to use their imagination in that they create the dialogue. This makes the book a personal and different experience for each child. They say that 10 people can look at the same picture and each will see something different. That is what this book does.

Joel Harper's new book is a refreshingly creative take on traditional storytelling. Providing 'just' visual prompts the book allows 'readers' to create the story as they flip the pages, the reader becomes an engaged maker of the story. Guided by stunningly beautiful illustrations, the story unfolds and takes shape through the imaginative collaboration of the young reader. And even though the plot is embedded in the images, the details can shift each time the story is engaged. Drawing on themes from Harper's previous book "All the Way to the Ocean," this is a story of discovery as two friends 'follow' the water cycle, which in this case includes not only oceans, lakes, and rivers, but storm drains. Harper's beautiful fostering of sustainability through environmental literacy is nothing short of inspirational.
