This slim style guide rehashes that not uncommon mistake along with 49 other equally obvious bloopers, which Safire boils down to short phrases that both illustrate and encapsulate the rule; e.g., "no sentence fragments" and "don't use contractions." Much of the text feels recycled from Safire's weekly "On Language" columns in the New York Times Magazine. A section on onomatopoeia, for example, is little more than an excuse to recount the origins of "zap." Even with such meager content, the book is repetitious, attacking more than once "the pretentious use of dead words" and outdated slang, colloquialisms and dialect. Some passages, like an account of the debate over using "he" as a universal pronoun, are long past their sell-by date. That's probably the biggest problem with this would-be stylebook: the language mavens who are Safire's core audience will find it all overfamiliar, while graduating high school students, into whose hands the book will certainly fall, may regard the author's humor as terminally unhip. Far above Cayuga's waters, the bible of how to write during my college years (and to this day to my knowledge) was/is Strunk & White's Elements of Style. [Strunk was an English professor; White was a star student of Strunk who accomplished a few literary successes of his own.]Bill Safire -- the maven of wordsmithing during my 20s and 30s -- has written a superb book that deserves companion status because it humorously and clearly teaches key rules of how to write correctly (and well). I generally give a copy to every employee who joins me because (unfortunately) they all seem to have lacked the magnificent fortune of having had English teachers comparable to those I had in 9th and 10th grade: Miss Fort and Mrs. Hope Bogorad. My sons will have to endure having their father go over this book page by page in its entirety with them when they are older. It's that good.
In an age of debased political speech, this book reminds that graceful language is still possible. I miss Sweet Ol' Bill's playfulness. Every page brings a smile.
I actually enjoyed this book very much. Mr. Safire writes with humor and wit; making the time I spent reading, not feel like a sentence.
I haven't quite finished reading the book. Got sucked to more interesting reading. Will get back to it eventually.
Lessons learned
Safire uses humorous examples of "bad" grammar to lead the reader in the proper direction. Each self-contained chapter is very short and covers a single grammatical problem. The material is easy to read -- and easy to understand. If you want to improve your grammar -- but don't want to wade through a textbook -- this inexpensive paperback is for you.
Great little book!! Of course his books are always great and loaded with humor.
Well worth reading, studying and rereading to get the full value and retention for everyday use of the important points.
