This is NOT a cookbook, although there are a few recipes within. It's an anthology of cookbooks by African American authors. And there are a LOT of them. Toni Tipton Martin has spent a lifetime collecting these books and bringing the (mostly) women to life. Why is this needed? Well, because for centuries African and African American cooks have not been given credit for the recipes they created and which nowadays are standards in our American cooking repertoire. When you have read this well researched book, you'll realize that Soul Food and Southern Food are one and the same.

The Jemima Code when I tell you I have been waiting to buy this book for at least 2 years it's the truth. But once I got it I was disappointed because there were no recipes in it. So I put in for a refund and the day I was about to send it back I felt like I shouldat least look through it again. So I flipped through the pages one more time and I was suprise as to what I found out. The book is a great reference and a foundation of the pride, committment, and love that these famous cooks put into the soul of their food. They made exceptionally good food with less resources than we have today. I absolutely love it and I am happy that my better judgement led me to look through the book one more time before sending it back. This is a wonderful purchase and I would recommend it to anyone that is a true cook.

Toni Tipton-Martin's book fills a tremendous hole in American culinary history. I would venture that few people know the extent to which African Americans have written and published cookbooks. I was certainly surprised to find out how early in the 1800s books were published as well as the number and variety of cookbooks that have been printed since that time. Many of this books remain a mystery because they are long out-of-print and oft-ignored by the mainstream publishers and press. When possible, and most importantly, Martin provides the author's biography, the backstory of their culinary experience and the social context surrounding the book's publishing. This is vital resource and a great read for anyone interested in getting a fuller picture and more nuanced understanding of American cuisine. As I was reading I thought of all the past cooks of my family.I wanted to talk to them and ask questions about their start in cooking - what was it like to cook in someone's home.Reading further I got a sense of the root of my professional cooking talents and my deep passion for cooking for othersand the enjoyment of seeing people enjoying good food. While this book is too large to fit in a Christmas stocking, it wouldbe a great gift for anyone who is interested in the history of America -- from the skillet to the table - African American Culinary History.

Just ordered this book after it being on my Wish List for 2 years. At first I was a little disappointed as I paged through it. I didn't see enough recipes, but after reading each page carefully and looking at the selected covers, recipes, written text and, poems, I was thankful that I kept it. The book provides a wonderful history and Toni's knowledge highlights the issues of prejudice and slavery and why these cooks/chefs never received their due. I'm looking forward to trying the cream cake "receipt" by Malinda Russell for Easter. Thanks Toni for my introduction.

This was an excellent purchase for me. This was more of a reference book than anything else. I totally enjoy having this book among my collection of cookbooks. This item arrived in a very timely manner and was in excellent condition.

I've been eagerly awaiting the publication of Toni Tipton-Martin's work. It arrived this morning along with long awaited rain to end California's drought. I curled up with it. At first I thought I might be disappointed because it is not a cookbook, but the history of 200 years of American cookbooks and their African-American authors. Surprize! The more I read, the more I realized that Tipton-Martin's work will have enormous consequences for culinary historians, who will have to integrate her evidence into their thinking about American food. For example, accounts of "California" cooking will need to include the Southern expatriates who flocked west around World War II. For me personally, the consequence will be exploring a whole new realm of recipes, if I can track down some of these neglected volumes.

I've used many of the older version control systems, like sccs, cvs, svn, tfs and so forth. But my current job uses Mercurial, and I've been struggling with it (it's definitely a different sort of beast) so I got this book. I can't say that I'm too impressed by the book. It's poorly organized and the way it is laid out, makes it difficult to pick it up and find answers to problems and questions. It's very "wordy" and that is not what I want in a technical book. My preferred technical books tend to favor examples and demonstrations of functionality over wordy discussions, so this book has been mostly useless to me.

This book has all the hallmarks of having been written by a computer nerd. (It was, in fact, written by one of the creators of Mercurial). So in other words, it's virtually incomprehensible — even to a computer professional with many years of experience.

If you pay only a little for this book or read the free version, you may get your money's worth.Pros:Aside from the errata, this book is relatively readable and useful. If you don't want to read the free version online, then you might find it useful.Cons:One wonders if the author cares. There are several problems with the diagrams and text. I could forgive that if the author bothered to provide an authoritative list of errata that I could use to correct my text. The O'Reilly web site provides a list of "UNCONFIRMED ERRATA" as reported by readers. But the author hasn't even bothered to review those. Neither has he corrected the free (pdf) version. That's a bit frustrating.

A stand-out in normal technical-manual fare. It goes over not just the boring (though important) low-level design choices in Mercurial, but over the much more interesting day-to-day usage and structure of HG in your workflow.For a project lead or technical manager looking at mercurial for your team, I recommend this book highly. It's also great for a programmer who's in-the-weeds in a project, as the book has dedicated a whole chapter to the extensible and workflow malleability HG allows.

I was used to using git for a DVCS, but my new job forced me to use Mercurial. What I liked about this book is that in many places, the author points out some of the underlying differentiating features that distinguish other DVCS systems (and SVN) from one another. With this book and TortoiseHg, I am now up and running pretty easily with Mercurial. Personally, I still much prefer git, but that isn't the book's fault.

One of the strong points about Mercurial is that you don't need a book like this to get started. But you'll want it anyway; there are subtleties to using Mercurial that you're not likely to figure out without some help. The author also makes a compelling argument for distributed source control in general, and Mercurial in particular. If you're trying to make a decision about choosing a source control system, you make well find his argument persuasive; I did.

MERCURIAL, THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE, is more a reference book than a book to use to learn Mercurial (or any of its bugs or idiosyncratic features). If you're interested in learning how to use Mercurial for anything but the simplest of tasks, you'd be better served by going to the Internet and searching for answers (google strikes again).Once you know how to use Mercurial backwards and forewards, this book would serve as a useful refresher on some minor features here and there. All in all, don't waste your money on this book. Spend the time learning off the Net instead - it costs less, and you'll get better answers.

This book is so close to great, but it really isn't. The paintings are excellent, but the author doesn't really write about birds: he has clipped every quote he has ever heard about birds and has tried to scotch tape them together, and it just doesn't work.

Thoughtful, varied and interesting text, accompanied by gorgeous paintings. The whole thing is a beautiful production, and I intend to enjoy it again and again.

SPOILER-ISH: You've been warned!So, I stayed up until 2 AM finishing this book. Ask me if I regret it? Nope! Rybet aka Callaluna blew me away. She is an amazing heroine. She’s tough but not stupidly obstinate which is the downfall of some of these mediocre RH series being produced with little thought to how the character would believable react to situations. Of course, like any RH series “The Royal Trials” has insta-attraction, an irresistible heroine and gorgeous heroes. I did appreciate that the heroes did not fall too much into the stereotypical RH formula. Lee is the sensitive hero, but not a doormat for the heroine either. Ty has a rough and gruff exterior with the soul of a big teddy bear. He’s just flirty enough without coming off as a playboy. Zan is probably the most dominant member of a RH series I’ve read. Zan can be withdrawn and prickly, but I loved that he also isn’t a massive jerk that the heroine is constantly fighting with. They have some sexy power struggle going on, but he doesn't make me want to slap the heroine for liking him. I really liked that the author didn’t try to detract from their budding relationship by bringing in past love interest drama or sexual history. I loved that even though Callaluna doesn’t realize it Lee, Ty and Zan in their hidden prince identity are still loyal to her. The chemistry is explosive and well thought out. You could sense the natural progression of their relationships. It was believable. I do hope we will get some of the heroes POV in the next 2 books. I’d love to know what they’ve been experiencing and there perception/feelings for Callaluna.The world building was excellent. There were a few times it became a little wordy and convoluted, but thankfully that was only a few pages. I also loved that we were given villains that I could genuinely hate. Please don’t get me started on the king. Someone please overthrow that dude! AND the King’s Snake gave me the creeps every time he was in a scene. He’s going to be a BIG problem.This story drew me in from the first page. I think we can all guess who Callaluna/Rybet really is, but the unknown of how she will overcome all the obstacles and discover her magic will have me one-clicking this entire series. I became invested in this story and can hardly wait to see the follow up because what a cliffhanger. Way to leave a girl hanging Ms. James!

I consider myself an amateur but serious student of judeo-christianity. Raised in the Christian faith, I began in adulthood to question how in the world the Gospels, written so many years after the death of Christ and in a language not even spoken by the Jewish rabbi Jesus and his Jewish disciples could be an accurate representation of Christ's mission. In particular, I am passionate to understand the early beginnings of Christianity, its split with Judaism and the rise of antisemitism, and I was so hopeful to learn more. UNFORTUNATELY, not from this book. I doggedly read to the end, wondering where the book's editor was hiding out. I too often thought my e-reader was duplicating pages only to realize that the repetitions were real. In many passages, the grammar was so poor that I could not tease out what the author really meant to convey. I began to wonder if the book was originally written in another language and this was just an incredibly poor English translation. In the end I believe that the author's scholarship may be impeccable and his intent is sincere, but the product was just too flawed to advance my learning. Don't waste your time on this book. Find another instead. Oh, and Mr Publisher, Get an editor!!!

If you are interested in the first temple period and/or the ties between Judaism and early Christianity, then this book is a great resource. Sources are always quoted and footnoted. The author has obviously done a vast amount of research in this area, as shown in this book and several others.

This book is a great resource for anyone who's interested in the historical contextual landscape that birthed the Jesus movement. There aren't many resources that I'm aware of that deal with the subject matter from an academic and religiously netural point of view that alone makes this book a valuable and unique resource.
