Shocking, infuriating, full of passion...and love and mercy and forgiveness! What a read! The author takes the reader on a ride through her world - finding out she lived through an attempted abortion. Her search for meaning, for love, for her birth parents - for the ANSWER - Why didn't you want me? is heartbreaking yet gentle. Her honesty is startling and frank. I was especially taken aback by how she was reviled and rejected by persons who would not, could not believe it was true - that a live child could result from a saline abortion- because they were so wedded to the notion that abortion is good for women.It's a bit of a roller-coaster, but never maudlin, never accusing, and though it is auto-biographical, it doesn't feel "me-centered". The author's acceptance of her beginnings, her ability to forgive and even sympathize with her birth mother's choice is a lesson for everyone. The hunt for information, for her birth parents is like a good detective story. Highly recommended, teens and up.

When Ms. Ohden was in college, her class was asked by their Psychology professor to write about a pivotal moment in their lives. Melissa wrote about the moment when, at fourteen years old, she found out she had survived an abortion. Her professor scored her writing highly but wrote a very hurtful note in the margins questioning as to why her parents had lied to her like that.I had to pause my reading. I’m an ex-nurse, a prolife activist for thirty years or more, and have often wondered how the abortion culture has kept the lid fastened so tight on every negative story about abortion that even people who claim to be highly educated are incredibly clueless and ignorant about it. Yet they all have an opinion, and most (in our liberal colleges) would be proud to say they are ‘pro-choice’ naïvely thinking that they are also being ‘pro-woman’. Pro-choice is not pro-woman. Melissa’s story shows how.In feminist culture ‘choice’ is supposed to confer autonomy. That’s not what happened to Melissa’s birth mother in October 1977. It would take Melissa years to unravel the events leading up to her mother’s abortion, and the facts make a mockery of ‘choice’.At the same time I was reading this book, I was reading ‘Gosnell’. There are parallels. When Melissa was born unexpectedly alive in St Luke’s Hospital, Sioux City, Iowa her grandmother (a nurse, and either at that time or later, a Professor of Nursing (!)), wanted her to be left to die. But unlike any of Gosnell’s born-alive victims, a nurse rushed Melissa to the NICU, where after an initial rocky beginning due to the saline in her system, she thrived. Her adoptive parents fell in love with her at first sight.This is an amazing story. Melissa takes us through her own inner journey, her emotions, her questioning and her healing. Much of her bewilderment and hurt came from being silenced. She was to find that her Professor’s was not a unique reaction.Melissa’s style of writing is very appealing. She writes from the heart. She includes photos - a super-cute one of her at 25 days, as a happy little girl on the farm, and one of her and her husband and two little girls, and several more. Always the beautiful smile. (How many more cannot and will never smile, because their lives were ended? It brings tears. Melissa is, in her own words, a voice for the voiceless).She is the Founder of the Abortion Survivors Network, where she and other survivors have related their stories online. She knows many more survivors who don’t wish to be publicly known. We live in a world that isn’t ready to accept. Survivors don’t fit the pro-choice narrative of ‘Women’s Rights’.This is a memoir that everybody should read. Melissa was not supposed to live to tell her tale, and our media block almost everything that throws Roe v. Wade into a bad light. Melissa’s birth mother urged her to keep up her public pro-life speaking – ‘You were the first person to ever fight for me,’ she told her. I found that very poignant. I suggest buying as many copies as you can to give away, and to ask for ‘You Carried Me’ at your library. If they don’t stock the book – give them one. If your bookseller doesn’t stock it, request it. Prolife people have learned that we have to be creative in making the injustice of abortion and its atrocities known to the public. Let me say that everyone on both sides of the abortion argument should read this book. The story on the surface is about abortion but the true message is about forgiveness. It is a very quick read so there is no reason not to try it.Although the story is unfathomable -- it is totally true. It will give you many things to ponder. There are a bit of personal opinions interspersed because it is a memoir. Yet it is not preachy. I can see her points but it did not change my own ideals.Yes, Melissa is a first time author so things could have been expanded and your heart strings could have been pulled with a bit more drama. However, it would not have changed the story or the outcome and possibly could have made the book look too slick.Melissa is a ray of hope to her mother, her birth mother, her half sisters, her children and the rest of her family. Someday, I look forward to a screenwriter taking her story and developing it further so more people can learn about forgiveness because that truly is what the story is about.

This book was heartbreaking, but uplifting as well. Melissa Ohden was aborted by her birth mother, but survived. There are so many things I want to say about this story but it's hard to put it into words. The overall message is forgiveness. Melissa was abe to forgive the people that hurt her the most and that, in this day and age, is extraordinary. I couldn't put the book down.

As an adoptee this story is deeply moving on many levels. In 1956 fortunately abortions weren't so easy and I was adopted into a loving home. I love to read, but I can't remember the last time I read a whole book in a day. I had seen Melissa in a pro-life video before, but I had no idea she had written a book until I stumbled across it on Amazon this week. I ordered it immediately, and I'm so glad I did. Both the book, as well as her video testimony, were impressive. Melissa's obstacles were great and many, and they seemed to continue throughout her life, but her surrender to God's timing and her willingness to forgive and to think the best when she was uncertain of the motives of others were outstanding. You Carried Me is an easy read, and the story is told in a way that you can't wait to get into the next chapter to see what further information unfolds as Melissa searches for her birth mother. The story is just real. Melissa makes no attempt to hide her own shortcomings during her most difficult years. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in pro-life causes, the impact of abortion, or the power of forgiveness.

Based upon the 3000+ reviews in just a month, and the rather high rating, I was definitely looking forward to The Short Drop, so you can imagine my surprise when I found that almost the complete first half of the novel, billed as a political thriller, was nothing but an excruciatingly slow set up for the second half of the book. Truly, other than finding out a few bits and pieces on the backgrounds of several of the lead characters (it's really more of a team effort than a single protagonist), the only thing that really "happens" in the entire first half of the novel is the recounting of the kidnapping of the current VP's daughter (who is now running for President), from 10 years earlier. Had it not been for the many positive reviews driving me on to find out what was so great about this book, I would definitely have stopped reading well before I got to the halfway point. While the writing was fairly crisp, the one thing that became particularly irksome was the repetitiveness of the author's sentence structure, which was basically, "The man did such and such." Again and again and again, and in a row. Not the sign of of professional writer in my humble opinion, who would or should know better, to vary the sentence structure to keep it from becoming so monotonous. That said, I did enjoy the second half of the book which did keep moving from beginning to end, holding my interest without my having to push myself to read it like I did for the first half of the book. This, however, then brings me to a rather troubling criticism, and one which should not be taken lightly. Perhaps it's, as they say, just a case of great minds thinking alike, but about a year and a half ago, I read a novel entitled, "The Moroni Deception," the quite memorable plot of which, has managed to stay with me this whole time (unlike a lot of formulaic thriller novels where you can barely recount the plot details a week later from the twelve previous that you read). So, when the central plot line in The Short Drop turned out to be the fact that a current Presidential candidate's 13 year old daughter had been kidnapped, I merely wrote that off as a coincidence. Then soon after, when a sociopathic assassin, on orders from who would appear to be the mysterious central villain, begins stalking the unsuspecting protagonist with orders to kill him if he should find what he is searching for, I was like, well that's certainly more that quite a bit coincidental also. But the near identical reveals in the finale, which I won't give away as a spoiler, I was now almost convinced went way beyond coincidence, and in retrospect, now seems like the majority of the very few plot lines in The Short Drop, are just several of the twists and subplots straight out of The Moroni Deception. While these plot lines provided the central and ultimately intriguing story in The Short Drop (the second half anyway), I don't think that is a good thing if they were in fact "borrowed."

I love when I find books outside of my usual genres of choice that I enjoy this much. I’ve found that thrillers, particularly those with a political bent, can be a little light on character development and a little heavy on the unbelievable-and-over-the-top plots. Not at all so with The Short Drop. The characters are well developed, complex and multi-faceted, flawed and susceptible to injury (both emotional and physical). The story and mystery build in that wonderful way that leaves you rooting for their success, fearing for their safety, and generally feeling as though they’re real people, having real experiences. I was equally invested in the outcome of the characters as the plot.Gritty, suspenseful and believable, I didn’t want (really couldn’t!) put it down. The ending is at once unexpected and darkly emotional. I felt like I’d gotten a glimpse into a world I didn’t want to have to see and couldn’t look away from.All of this combined with good writing and great word usage make this a book I’m likely to read more than once!

The Short Drop by Matthew Fitzsimmons is one of those books that got pretty popular with thousands of reviews on Amazon yet I have no idea how. It's really one of those things that is so mysterious to me but when I saw it on sale for $1.99, I quickly swiped it up. Everyone needs to read a good mystery story from time to time. I don't think I've ever used the word "meh" in any of my reviews. It's unprofessional and well, not really a word at all. But I just can't help but label this book as anything but "meh". I'm sorry author, but I had to do it. The "reveal" was hardly anything worth plowing through this 400 page book for. Characters teetered on the borderline of me not really caring for. Not to mention, a closure with characters that literally, and I mean literally had me blurting out the words "Are you serious?". All this combined to make me drop that three letter bomb on this book.The author does give us characters that are at least believable in that they aren't dodging bullets every other chapter like the second coming of the matrix. However, these very same characters are very cookie cutter like and stereotypical. Like hmm, where have we met these guys before? Oh that's right, every other book out there. I can almost guarantee that by the time you finish with the book, you'll hardly remember any of them the day after.The pacing of the story was a bit slow going but I didn't have any trouble following the plot or what was going on. The actual writing was average in that he did just enough to not make me fall asleep or stop reading altogether. Some of the cliff hangers at the end of the chapters made sure I read just a little more than I should. The biggest disappointment with this book was the actual mystery itself. Once that tiny bit of hint was dropped, I kept thinking please don't do what I think you're going to do. Please don't. Ah crap. You did.The other disappointment came from how things actually ended or unfolded with a couple of the character at the end. It was just mind boggling to me of how the author chose to end it. It was hilarious but in a very bad way. I definitely have to drop the hammer in my spoiler section below.As you can gathered, my review is pretty negative. There's not much to like and many of the ideas used could have been more original. It just felt like something was holding the author back. If he could have been more daring, I think the story might have interested me a lot more.************SPOILERS BELOW************Billy - A littleclosure would have been nice since he loved Suzanne so much. He most likely would have found out about what happened to Lombard in the end but again, a little closure for the story would have been nice.George - You did him dirty. We follow him for the better part of the book and we have no idea what happens to him in the end. I can only assume that Jenn was able to find and save him.Tinsley - Let's be friends? Are you serious? Let's be friends? After all that talk about the meaning of time for Tinsley throughout the book, I expected something a lot more clever in the end than "Let's be friends". Come on man.Lombard - Biggest joke of a closure I have read in a while. After all that, we as the readers don't even get to witness the final exchange between Lombard and his wife when she confronted him. You serious author? Why even devout sections to Lombard if all you're going to do is this in the end and block it out for the readers? It was a waste of time. I would have expected for the big, bad and witty politician to put up a fight and at least deny things. In fact, there wasn't even condemning evidence as Tinsley had the report! All the wife had was some writing in Suzanne's book which could have been misconstrued for something else if he played it smart!

Starts good with interesting characters and complex plot but ends poorly with many loose ends and an unsatisfying final chapter. If this is a first novel, it is a portentous beginning. I think a new editor might be a help.

This book goes over the entire Monday Night War and what is now called the Attitude Era in great detail from an outside Kayfabe (In storyline) perspective. With over 200 fully colored and nicely printed pages, this is definitely worth the price of admission.

Okay, so the bottle opener is cool as hell. Let's get that out of the way. As for the book itself, it's a pretty extensive look at the key moments and figures of the Attitude Era, but it's not for the casual fan / reader. A lot of times the book jumped right into talking about subjects with barely a sentence worth of context to set it up. It's a great read if you already know a ton about wrestling and its 90's history. If not, you might be a touch lost at times. Nothing a quick Google search wouldn't fix, but it might be annoying.

Awesome book with tons of pictures from the Attitude Era, not a ton of personal stories but there are a few pages worth at the very end. I liked how they didn't edit anything out (Chris Benoit, Chyna, TNA, etc). Perfect book to leave out in a table in your man cave.

I waited till I took the first exam to review this book. This book is well written and a joy to read. Its rare for a technical book to be this pleasant to read. So I read the first nine chapters and took the 410 exam. Unfortunately though, I failed. I was feeling good after reading this book from cover to cover. I was doing well on all their practice exams, scoring 100 on almost all of them. I thought I knew everything I needed to know to pass the 410 exam. Going through the first five questions on the actual exam, I knew right away I was in trouble.I felt like I was maybe taking the wrong exam. I continued with the exam but it didn't get any better. So many things weren't covered in the book.Here's what I think about this book. It claims it covers 100% of all the exam objectives. Yes this is true. The book "touched" upon every exam objectives BUT it didn't cover everything about all of those exam objectives. From my experience, it wasn't even close.I was lucky enough to have good guessing skills to actually almost pass but no cigar.While I don't discourage anyone from buying this book (because you would learn something), I would caution those who will rely only on this book.

I've earned multiple certifications over the past 13 years; my last Server OS exam was 7 years ago, so I choose this book to dive back in. I was looking at taking the -417 exam (I can vouch that, yes, -417 will upgrade a 2003 MCSE certification). After having failed my first exam attempt, and passing my second, I can say this book alone is definitely not enough to get you ready to pass -417 (or any of the other exams, either).I have used MS Press books for most of my career. My learning strategy may be different than most. I setup my own virtual lab my own way, read through the book, and then try to do variations on the exercises - I don't do them the exact same way. I use different names, different IP addresses, etc. so I'm not just working rote out of the book. I'm also used to the way some of the MS Press books are written - you start out with an infrastructure that is small, but expands as you go through the book - so the examples in the book tend to flow from chapter to chapter and give you a feel that you are building something all the way through to the end. This book is not like that at all. Most of the exercises seem to occur in a vacuum, and aren't detailed enough for my liking. My first Windows 2000 lab was quite robust once I finished all my studying. My lab after following this book felt hollow.Having been focused as a DBA, application developer, and SharePoint administrator for the past 8 years, this book was a good refresher for a lot of the aspects I already knew. However, -417 focuses on what's changed since 2008, with some review thrown in. I saw many other reviewers say this book wasn't enough to pass the test, but I didn't appreciate how right they were.To echo other reviewers, PowerShell and Azure are not covered enough. The -412 content is covered the worst of all. Federation Services, DirectAccess, clustering, and Hyper-V aren't given near enough depth. After reading the Federation Services chapter twice, I still felt as if I had learned nothing coherent. The author does mention "you should find your own labs" for some of these topics, and boy was he correct. Microsoft does make some excellent labs for AD-FS and DirectAccess (I highly recommend them).This book hits all the correct topics, just not with enough depth or good enough examples for me to recommend it to anyone.

This book weighs a ton... Now I am wishing I would have bought it in Kindle form, since most of my reading is done in bed and it's pretty unwieldy to have to hold in that position. Thus far, I am pretty satisfied with the content. The process for redeeming the online content wasn't very intuitive, though. I had to search on the web a bit and found that you have to register on the website listed in the book and it will ask you some questions about the content of the book to verify you are entitled to access the bonus/supplemental materials. Looking forward to rounding out my studies and testing out, since I have it on my calendar to get my MCSE/Private Cloud this year.

It's a well written book that doesn't put you to sleep. Like most other reviews, I will agree that while you walk away with some new knowledge and skills, you will NOT pass the exams on this book alone. There isn't nearly enough depth on the topics and objectives. While I passed just all EOC quizzes and "Practice Exams" in the 90+% range, when I purchased an official Microsoft practice exam - I failed miserably. At the end of the day it came down to memorizing answers for the exams (I'm on a time crunch to get these exams completed), It's a good resource to learn some new things, but the labs are sort of pointless honestly. This book is great if you're looking to expand your knowledge on the technology a little, but if you want to take the exam and really know your stuff, you need to supplement with other sources and really dive into some microsoft labs on technet. I can help but feel the authors know this book will not solely help you pass the exam and is a cash flow for them.
