Charming and fascinating, an inviting inspiration about finding and embracing who you truly are. I instantly fell in love with Amelia and her courage; a true testament to the melting pot that America is supposed to be. An uplifting read that breaks expectations, stereotypes and gives hope to all of us!
What a total surprise! This book just makes me smile. I'm busy like so many people with work and family and so it's challenging to finish a book these days, but Amelia's voice would just tug at me to pick up where I left off and see what happens to her next. I bought the book because I knew I needed to challenge my biases around Islam and Muslims and deepen my shallow knowledge of the religion and its people. To learn it this way, through someone who was in my own shoes (also biased and unfamiliar), just took away my sense of guilt and anxiety for not knowing more. It put me at ease. The author's sense of humor and authentic voice is key to the book's ability to transcend what could have been a lecture or a bitter pill about the terrible experiences she suffered. Instead, I found a voice that is warm, engaging, smart, insightful, and honest about her journey. I related to her, understood finally why Muslim women wear the hijab, and truly see that extremists (in any cause, community, group) do not reflect all Muslims as many Americans have a knee jerk tendency to believe. Her chosen path to marry a man outside her culture, their deep love and friendship, their challenges, her conversion, the rejection and discrimination she suffered over her decision to wear the hijab (a result of her own convictions and principles as a Muslim), her hardship after moving to Egypt... each chapter had nuggets for me to chew on and ponder. This book has heart, the author is authentic, and her experiences are real. I've already bought a copy for a friend who, like me, feels a need to understand those different from us especially at a time when our nation seems so divided. Good job, Amelia!

Amelia weaves a fascinating first account romantic story of 2 people born half a globe apart meeting, dating, and ultimately falling in love. While reading this book I enjoyed her vivid descriptions I'm very interested in Lifestyles that are different than mine. Who doesn't like a good love story? Amelia's account of or her life and love story with Amir is so precious. She gives Vivid details of their dates overlooking the Nile River. I feel like I'm looking out with her. At times I felt I was roasting on the streets of Cairo. Amelia is a wonderful Storyteller. I've truly enjoyed reading this real life story. I am a reader, clearly not a writer. But felt compelled to say a little something from my heart about this book. Amelia is so relatable. Just made my heart smile. Hope it does the same for you.
