Great

This is a very solid job at describing a constantly moving target. The authors (the first and third are at California State University-Fullerton, while Brian Gross teaches out in Jakarta and has enjoyed extensive experience in all three media) help to bring ever more important Internet content into the media mainstream with their treatment. Chapters cover the history of programming in all three services (and related areas such as video games), sources of television programming, sources of radio and Internet content, development of content for each of the three, testing of audience reactions, elements of successful programming, factors influencing television programming, factors impacting radio and Internet content, scheduling strategies for each of these services, program evaluation, changing and canceling programs, and ethical issues. The book is more descriptive than critical in approach, and helps readers get behind the scenes to better understand the players and process.

This book is spot on. As an industry professional for over 20 years, I can attest to the validity of Gross's points. I used thisas a text in my graduate TV programming course at NYIT's Manhattan campus a few years back. Can't use it anymore since it is now 10 years old and Focal Press has no plans for an update.

Voices of the Damned, by Barbie Wilde

Review

Publishers Weekly Starred Review: “In this impressive collection of short stories, actor Wilde (who played the Female Cenobite in the film classic Hellbound: Hellraiser II) reveals a world of beautiful fear. The most delightfully terrifying entries form the Cilicium Trilogy, which reveals the complex origin and destiny of Sister Cilice. This character-focused exploration is sensual in its brutality. In “Writer”s Block,“ Wilde combines the psychological torture of an unknown artist with the erotic egotism of fandom to create a fascinating sexual horror. She creates a dreadful family legacy in “Botophobia,“ in which there are not merely skeletons in the closet but unworldly powers hidden in the basement. Wilde”s mastery of shocking violence is given full rein in subjects ranging from reclusive self-imprisonment to the exploration of European nightmares. As much a chilling collection of frightful fiction as a delight for the darker senses, this is a satisfying triumph in a befitting, unforgiving, style. (Oct.)“ (c) 2015 PWxyz LLC Publishers Weekly. Used by permission. Review Extracts: “Voices of the Damned is raw, twisted, horrifying and seductive. Barbie Wilde takes no prisoners & she does not disappoint!“ ―Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Dead of Night and Ghostwalkers “...this collection of eleven short stories confirms Wilde as a foremost author of erotic horror fiction“ ―Jon Towlson, Starburst magazine and author of Subversive Horror Cinema: Countercultural Messages of Films from Frankenstein to the Present “...her work is so uncanny and fearless, it is a must have for any horror aficionado.“ ―writers and directors the Soska Sisters (Dead Hooker in a Trunk, American Mary, See No Evil 2, Vendetta) “Raised from the dead, this phantasmagoria of tales offers well-written mini-nightmares that will traumatize, titillate, and stick in your mind long after you’ve closed the book.“ ―Filmmaker Izzy Lee, Fangoria Online “If testosterone jumping erotica combined with heart racing fear is your bag of horror then this is just what you’re looking for…“ ―Paul Nelson, Scream Horror Magazine UK “Voices of the Damned is one of those seminal collections put out by an independent publisher that not only heralds the arrival of an awe inspiring new fiction writing talent but also bodes well for the genre into which this particular author has so nobly shoe-horned herself. Just as with Clive Barker, there is no apology for the horrors about which she writes, indeed, the whole tome is a celebration of the weird, fantastic, and, oh yes, the nauseous.“ ―John Gilbert, Fear magazine Issue #35

About the Author

"Damaged people, ultraviolence, murder and explicit sex--what's not to love about her work?" --"Bad Barbie" Featurette, Fangoria (America's #1 Horror Magazine)Barbie Wilde is best known for playing the Female Cenobite in Clive Barker's classic British cult horror movie, HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II. Before moving to the UK, Wilde attended Syracuse University in New York State, majoring in Drama and Anthropology. She continued her education in London, studying Drama, Classical Mime and Art History, before joining Britain's largest classical mime troupe, SILENTS.Wilde has performed in cabaret in Bangkok, Thailand; robotically danced in the Indian blockbuster, JANBAAZ; was a vicious thug in Michael Winner's DEATH WISH 3; and played a drummer in the so-called "Holy Grail of unfinished and unreleased 80's horror": GRIZZLY II: THE CONCERT, which also featured then unknowns George Clooney, Laura Dern and Charlie Sheen. In the early 1980s, Wilde danced professionally at the top nightclubs and rock venues of New York, London and Amsterdam with her group, SHOCK. SHOCK released two singles on RCA Records and supported such artists as Gary Numan, Ultravox, Depeche Mode and Adam and the Ants. Wilde wrote and presented eight music and film review TV programs in the 1980s and 1990s, interviewing such pop personalities as Iggy Pop, The Sisters of Mercy, The B-52s and Johnny Rotten, as well as actors Nicolas Cage and Hugh Grant. Wilde was also a Casting Director for the BBC's THE BUDDHA OF SUBURBIA and for MTV's THE REAL WORLD: LONDON.In 2009-2015, Wilde contributed short stories to 14 horror or crime anthologies and publications. In 2012, Comet Press published Wilde's debut serial killer novel, THE VENUS COMPLEX. Fangoria has called Wilde "one of the finest purveyors of erotically charged horror fiction around".

There’s a temptation to treat Barbie Wilde’s anthology Voices of the Damned in one of two ways: the first as a horror fan looking to curry favor, or the second as someone looking to prove that he’s not impressed by Wilde’s iconic status in the horror genre.I won’t do either, because Voices of the Damned deserves better. This is an extraordinary collection that doesn’t just break taboos, but shatters them and dances with stiletto heels upon the mewling, agonized pieces. Wilde explores a breadth of themes that go beyond the standard tropes of sex and death, of torment and delight, of holiness and profanity, taking us to new, disturbing realms of imagination that we haven’t seen since Clive Barker’s visionary Books of Blood. Her unique blend of dry humor and graphic description will have you smiling in one sentence and holding down your gorge in the next.In her Sister Cilice stories, Sister Cilice, The Cilicium Pandoric, and The Cilicium Rebellion, Wilde takes control of the character she portrayed in Hellraiser, making the female Cenobite her own person with a past, present, and terrible future. When does devotion become masochism, agony transform to orgasm? And what happens after, when desires are sated? The zombie theme gets a disgusting workout in Zulu Zombies, with an introductory scene that very few writers would have the courage to relate. It’s fun, a bit campy, and just different enough to make you realize that there’s (un)life in the zombie genre yet.American Mutant tackles evangelist Christianity, America’s deep south, and family. It relies on cliché for laughs, and as a send-up of religious yokels below the Mason-Dixon line, we’ve seen it before. The Alpdrucke and Gaia are the workhorses of the collection, serving up non-standard horrors that keep you turning the pages without making you work too hard.Valeska made up for that with a bizarre conceit that Wilde cleverly manages to keep from descending into pornography through deft characterization and the shattering of expectations. Some vampires are Sanguines, and they drink blood. Others are Seminals, and they drink…well, you’ll figure it out.Polyp was hysterically funny, with a deep core of horror that doesn’t leave you alone when the story’s over. Botophobia takes you first one way, then another, then kidnaps you and hauls you to a disquieting place you didn’t see coming. The life of a horror writer with the attendant social media BS, personal marketing, and convention attendance gets a hilarious treatment in Writer’s Block. If you’ve ever wanted to know what the writer’s life is really like (sort of), including encounters with crazed fans in hotels, this is your story. The praise for this collection from horror luminaries like Doug Bradley, The Soska Sisters, and Jonathan Maberry isn’t overstated. Inside, you’ll find things to bite you, kiss you, and…and do other things. Whatever happens to our beloved horror genre in the coming years, Barbie Wilde’s already put her mark upon it, and the news is both enticing and terrifying.(Review originally published at The Slaughtered Bird: [...]

I wasn’t particularly offended, but is not a particularly good piece of writing now, is it?The Cenobite Trilogy was interesting.

thoroughly enjoyed this collection of short stories which range from straight up horror to sci-fi horror. I will admit I read the Sister Cilise stories first, as I am a big Hellraiser fan.

Awesome, love this book and Barbie, I've loved her work for years

Always looking for cutting edge horror to indulge my love of the macabre. This liitle collection of shorts breathes new life into the books of blood that Mr. Barker started years ago.

brilliant and brutal. Barbie Wilde again takes you into her shocking and imaginative worlds. a must have for horror fans. she ranks with King,Barker and rice

I remember reading Barbie Wilde's incredible, noir crime novel "The Venus Complex" just a few tears back, and being completely blown away. My only prior exposure to the writer Barbie Wilde's work had been "Sister Cilice" a short story based on the Cenobite Demon character that Barbie Wilde the actress had portrayed in "Hellraiser 2 : Hellbound, in the Paul Kane and Marie O'Regan edited anthology "Hellbound Hearts". That story blew my mind as well, and for those who are of like mind, there are two equally brilliant Sister Cilice stories in this book that complete a Sister Cilice trilogy. I also recall Barbie commenting, when approached to write and put together this collection of genre spanning short stories something along the lines of, "But I don't write Horror". I for one, am so glad that she went for it and was mistaken in that thought. But the horror genre doesn't nearly even begin to encompass what she accomplishes here. There's Horror, a touch of Sci-Fi, and well, such a blend of imagination and creativity that labels might just as well be checked at the door, or perhaps, portal. This is a wild (see what I did there) ride of dark, erotic, frightening, creepy, and sometimes graphic content, that is never predictable, formulaic, or clichéd. This is clearly an author possessed of the kind of rare talent, creativity and imagination to take the reader anywhere she chooses, in a thoroughly gripping, engaging, and well structured manner. You don't ever see it coming, and even after it does, you're left thinking and sometimes simply stunned, in a sort of deep set afterglow. There is also some spectacular art included here, by the likes of Clive Barker, Nick Percival, Eric Gross, Tara Bush, and others, that nicely supplements the brilliant imagery already firing in the reader's imagination. Brilliantly done, both epic and intimate, chilling and erotic, and completely mesmerizing. Godspeed with the next work or works that Barbie Wilde decides to bring us.

I'm only writing a review on the product more so than the subject matter. After reading a lot of reviews of binding issues on this hardcover by IDW that I felt like I should add my experience to keep this up to date. I received mine in a book box all by itself, tightly packed by Amazon so that's good. I also have the 2nd volume to compare which does in fact have a much better/tighter glued binding. Now I don't have any loose pages or anything falling out, but I can tell that the threading glued to the spine won't hold up over time or numerous readings. But, I am careful with all my hardcover books, especially nice quality ones like this. If I take care of this, I don't think I'll have any issues, but will update my review if pages start falling out. It's risky, spending $30 plus on a book that might end up a scrap pile of loose pages. Hopefully mine holds up, and hopefully others get decent copies that don't fall apart. At least Amazon returns are generally easy in case your copy is rubbish! And for anyone wondering, Kevin Eastman's reboot of his own creation is amazing. Love old Eastman and Laird TMNT but this new series is fantastic and a must read! FULLY APPROVED!

I'm sorry - I've been a fan of the turtles since they came out - one of the reasons that Mirage sold me back in the day was that the comics were, like my other favorites of the time Cerebus & the Tick, Boris the Bear, etc., printed in gritty black and white. It looked awesome. Way better than the corny color marvel and dc garbage, who wants color comics anyway, so goofy looking, I thought at the time. Black and white is the way to go, I'd think as I biked home with the latest from Eternity comics, or Blackthorne. So let's flash forward to now - the Ultimate Collection is released, looks amazing, larger format, black and white, nicely bound, very cool. Hmm, where's issue 18? Why no 'Shell of the Dragon'? Ohh, I see, they're cherrypicking issues to keep the major storylines, not releasing them all in order of publication. Grimacing, I bite back a tear and steel my soul, I can get over it because the Ultimate collection in hardcover, incomplete as it is in terms of the original run, is a pretty great addition to the library. Perhaps in the future I can get issue 18 collected in some sort of graphic novel or other release from IDW. Well, here we are. The lost issue of my youth, number 18, the Shell of the Dragon, released on the 25th Anniversary!! Pretty amazing. When it came in the mail and I opened up the box, revealing the cover, nicely bound hardback copy, happily anticipating reading one of my favorite stories from the past, until...why...I stare aghast at the travesty in front of me. COLORIZED!!!! Why???? It looks so terrible it's less than a joke. Gone is the gritty black and white, the coolness wiped away by garish swaths of unnecessary color. Literally, it ruined the stories. So sad, I feel completely ripped off actually. If TMNT had been released in color originally, I would never have bothered to read it. I don't understand why IDW is colorizing these classic B&W era turtles comics?? Please stop! I bought the 'Tales of the TMNT' collection 1 as well - the Rat King and Savanti Romero lost all their brutal piteousness and have now become goofy color caricatures of themselves. Very sad - whoever is making decisions at IDW needs to stop allowing colorization of Mirage TMNT. If I wanted color I'd have read the Archie comics version with all the four year olds. Mirage was Casey Jones in harsh stark black and white swinging his hockey stick at a foot ninjas face. Archie was color, "pizza dude!", for children. So sad. so yes I feel ripped off, i feel IDW is not giving the right treatment to these classic tales, and would like it if they released these issues in the true, original, black and white version.

I have been a turtles fan since the beginning. This was hard for me to read ANOTHER origin story. There are so many I've lost count. But Lets start with the pros. The presentation is excellent. Paper quality, binding, GREAT. And it even has a string for a bookmark. It reads easy and is organized wonderfully. I had to put aside pre concieved notions to get through it. It is yet a new origin story. The culture is updating with the thinking of the time, which may be good maybe bad depending on you personally. My favorite origin story is from the original 1988 cartoon series. To me It held up the best. The artwork in this first volume is to me the worst. I've seen it changes towards the end. The Leonardo one shot micro series has the updated art style I prefer. Then it continues a few more issues with the prior style. The style seems to morph back and forth with IDW collection 2. (Which I can't get a hold of now, why has it gone out of print? So I'll be picking up with volume 3.) But turtles comics have been known to jump around with art styles. A lot of things come together well in the first volume. ( which to me gets ruined by being unable to get a hold of volume 2, but I may have to switch to the trade pbs. So Im trying to decide to skip it and move to vol 3.) Thats it for my review. Enjoy reading!
